Whale Talk Essay

    Whale Talk by Chris Crutcher has a very interesting main character. His name is The Tao Jones, but he has had everyone call him T.J. his whole life. T.J. makes an interesting main character. He is mixed races and was adopted by great people (just like superman). In this book T.J. goes through hard times of having struggled with anger problems, racial comments, and being disliked by teachers for not being a part of the athletic system at Cutter High. I believe that T.J. was both brave and stupid in his actions at different key points in the book. And in the end of the book, I believe that overall T.J. won.

    I believe that T.J. was brave in this book at different times. The first example that shows that T.J. was brave was when he stood up for Chris in the halls as Mike Barbour was telling him forcefully that he shouldn’t wear his dead stepbrother’s Letter Jacket. This was brave because he was looking out for people smaller than himself and helping them and not just ignoring it like the other people. Another example is when T.J. brings Heidi, Rich Marshall’s stepdaughter, into his house and out of Marshall’s. He does this when her mom leaves on one of her trips. Heidi goes to T.J's house because Marshall will get angry with her and kick and hit her. This is brave because Marshall has a very big temper and when he gets mad he goes all out (especially after drinking).

    There are some points in Whale Talk where T.J. does some stupid things. One example is when he throws his body over the deer so Marshall won’t shoot it. This is very stupid because if Marshall had one too many beers and couldn’t hold the rifle steady, he might have accidentally shot T.J. If this had happened than T.J. most definitely would have died.

    Another part where he acted stupidly was where he was following Barbour. He was following Barbour because he hit T.J.’s girlfriend’s best friend. This was stupid because if he actually caught him and beat Barbour up then he could go to jail for assault. He could have done something smarter like call the police.

    Overall in the end I believe that T.J. won, even though his dad was murdered. I believe this because he was able to help all the weird people in the school to get Letter Jackets. He also was the only one to not get one. I believe that he did this on purpose though, so all the kids who should not have gotten letter jackets got them and the one person that was expected to get one, did not. He also won because he met his father’s son who is exactly like him. Also, now everyone will hear his dad's story and look at how bad Rich Marshall really is.

    In conclusion, T.J. did some brave things, such as looking out for Chris and taking Heidi in while her mom was gone. He also did some stupid things like protecting a deer by sitting on it and following Barbour instead of calling the police. Overall in the end I believe that T.J. won because he helped the different people get Letter Jackets, met his father’s son, and he knows that everyone is hearing his dad’s life story, just like the whales.

I really liked this book and really acquired something from it.
