With the turn of the new century and increased awareness of the necessity of digital (and electronic) communication, the responsibility of the educated community is to reach out to those people who do not have the resources and knowledge to purchase and operate a computer.  YOU are the educated community, so what can YOU do?

 What is Big Business doing?
  • Apple sells computers at cost to public schools and provides technological support.  Apple also devised the Apple Mobile Learning Lab which allows schools that do not have a designated computer lab to use computers.  The collection of laptops are delivered completely assembled in a mobile cart for easy set-up and storage.  When needed, the teacher moves the cart into the appropriate classroom that will be using the computers.
  •
  • Microsoft donates $31 million to "failed and forgotten" small, alternate public schools to excite students about staying in school and becoming technology experts.
  •
  • WildBlue, an internet service provider, offers internet service to rural states, such as Kansas, who did not have access to DSL, cable modems, or wireless broadband service.
What are Libraries doing?
  • Nationwide, libraries provide computer and internet service to students and patrons of the library at minimal charge.
  •
  • College libraries often offer library services of the town in which they are located.

For Social Justice, what can you do as part of this educated community?
  • Help a peer learn how to use a computer.
  •
  • Run fundraisers to help schools purchase computers.
  •
  • Contact your local library or a neighboring library about holding a Computer Workshop.
Caldwell Public Library Board of Trustees next meeting is September 25, 2008.  Make your suggestions heard.
