Program Description:

The Department of Psychiatry, faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University offers clinical, or research, Fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry. The goals of the Fellowship are 1) to increase clinical investigators in the field of Geriatric Psychiatry, 2) to enhance knowledge and skills in the area of Geriatric Psychiatry of personnel who will focus their future work in Geriatric Psychiatry, and 3) to train these personnel to have skills to do research regarding mental health problems in the elderly.

There are variety of Fellowship's focus, i.e. late-life mood disorder, geriatric consultation-liaison psychiatry, cognitive disorders, elderly care-giving, measurements in geriatric psychiatry, etc.

The supervisor will discuss with the Fellow before starting the program about each fellow’s study plans so that the program could be individually tailored to match the needs and experiences of the Fellow. There are 3 main activities that we expect the Fellow to learn;

Research: There is also the expectation that each Fellow will conduct an independent investigation of their own, will publish at least one important article per year, and will present at important conferences in their area of interest annually. This task is set for 60% of total Fellow’s activities per year.

Clinical: We expect good Clinical work which matches with the ongoing research interests of the Fellow. Fellow will learn from direct skill training from supervisor. The Department will provide adequate numbers of patients for Fellow to learn from, both at the out-patient and the in-patient units.  

Education: The direct supervision and teaching is set for at least once a week during the Fellowship. Moreover, the Fellow will benefit from the multiple educational activities i.e. lectures, seminars, case conference, evidence-based geriatric psychiatry seminar. Other educational resources in the university, or, national level, may be accessed as appropriate for the Fellow.
