First Book for the GLE

Mark's Gospel: Catechumenal Way of the Lord to the Father is the first book for the GLE. It aims to guide believers in any household of the ecclesial community in a religious experience of the Gospel according to Mark. It leads present-day followers of Christ in a process of reevangelization in the real-life situation of any household whether a family unit, single persons living together or priests/ministers who live or come together, or a religious community – active or contemplative. The Marcan way of the Lord is the way of the cross. It prepares believers for either a physical or spiritual martyrdom. Both blood and bloodless martyrdom have been part of the way of the Lord to the Father from the beginning of Christianity. In the early church, martyrdom was a test of the martyr's faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus challenged the disciples and the multitude to give up their life for his sake and for sake of the gospel (Mk 8:34-35). In imitation of the Teacher, there have been countless martyrs from Stephen to our day who suffered a gruesome, bloody death for the sake of the gospel. A bloodless martyrdom is living the gospel way, the gospel truth, and the gospel life, according to Jesus' own example. The way of the Lord leads a follower of Christ both to the tomb and to the resurrection. Martyrdom is the Marcan understanding of discipleship. The usage of the term martyrdom connotes several stages of the way ("Hodos" Greek word for “the way”) in Mark: 1. a disciple's desire to die for his or her faith in Jesus, 2. personal awareness of one's nothingness, nakedness, detachment, honesty and vulnerability; 3. dying to the false self and rising to the true self; 4. a disciple's personal, hope-filled journey away from sinfulness and any form of addictive behavior; 5. it is the challenge to move from conditional to unconditional love. Martyrdom is an active process in the total giving up of oneself to Jesus' way. Martyrdom whether physical or spiritual/interior is a disciple's testimony on a life centered in Christ. In a true sense, the Marcan way is Jesus' crucified and redemptive way to the Father.

The book on Mark's Gospel is divided into two parts: Part I is the framework for a gospel listening experience of the Marcan Text. Chapter 1 provides a historical background for a religious experience of the Gospel according to Mark. Chapter 2 explains the catechumenal way of the Lord in the Marcan Gospel. Chapter 3 illustrates the catechumenal paradigm - Teacher/disciple in the gospel. Chapter 4 presents the process used in the gospel listening experience. Part II contains some notes for the GLE of the Marcan text. In the book on Mark's Gospel, this part is divided in this way: Chapter Five--Mark 1:1-3:6; Chapter Six--Mark 3:7-6:6; Chapter Seven--Mark 6:7-8:30; Chapter Eight--8:31-10:52; Chapter Nine--Mark 11:1-13:37; Chapter Ten--Mark 14:1-16:20.
