Let's take a look at the Navigation Pane.

Sent Mail shows all of the messages you have sent.
Drafts holds the messages you have started and saved to work on later.
All Mail shows almost all of your mail (no spam or trash).
Spam is where all suspicious email is sent. Gmail's spam filter is excellent!
Trash is wehere all of the messages you delete are sent
Contacts is your address list.
Organization
Gmail provides several ways to organize your mail to make your like easier.
Labels
Labels are similar to folders. However, you can label messages and still leave them in your Inbox. You can also color code your labels, which will help you find thigs. In addition, you can apply more than one label to a message.
Create a label 'on the fly' by selecting the message. . .
then select New label from the More Actions drop down menu. Enter a name for your label and click OK.
The name of your label will appear just before the subject line.
At this point, you can click Archive; any selected messages will disappear from your Inbox, but will remain listed when you click the appropriate label, or All Mail. All you are doing when you archive a message is helping to keep the Inbox clutter down.
A simpler way to find archived messages is to do a Search.
Remember, label first, archive later.
You can find all your messages that have the same label attached by clicking the label's name in the Labels section in the lower-left part of any Gmail page.
You can further organize your labels, by color coding them. This will make items you need to keep current easy to find. You can apply more than one label to messages to make them even easier to find.
Filters If you do not want to mark all your messages one-by-one, you can set up filters. The filter will detect when a particular individual emails you, and automatically applies the correct label.
Create a Filter from the Inbox
Select the action or actions you want this filter to apply to this type of message. If you regularly get email from someone and apply the same label to it, you can create a filter to automatically apply that label as soon as a message comes in. You can also choose to have the messages skip the inbox and be automatically archived. NOTE: If you do this, it is important for you to check this archive for new messages. You will see a number in parentheses beside the label if yoiu have unread messages.
Filters can make it much easier to manage your email.
