Becoming Catholic and Returning to the Faith (RCIA)

Are you interested in learning more about becoming Catholic?

Were you baptized as a Catholic, but have not received Holy Communion or Confirmation?

Then RCIA is the process to get you started on the journey into full communion with the Catholic Church!

What does RCIA stand for?
RCIA stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults.

When does it start?
Because God draws us into a relationship at any time throughout the year, it is never too late to sign up and there is no waiting to begin your journey.  Simply call the parish office (858-271-0207) or e-mail the Director of Catechetical Ministries (goodshepherddcm@gmail.com) and give your name, and someone from the RCIA team will contact you and begin meeting with you so you can begin your journey!

Can I just go ask questions without commiting yet?
Of course!  The first phase of your journey is a period of Inquiry, which means, just asking questions and getting an overview of the Catholic faith, without any commitment. Just call and check it out!

How long does it take?
"It takes as long as it takes."  It is a journey...it is your journey. Which means depending on where you are already on journey with the Lord when you call, it may take a different amount of time than someone else who is coming with a different set of circumstances. For some, one year is not enough time. For others who were raised in Protestant faith communities and now would like to become Catholic, it may take less time.  So give us a call so we can make sure to accompany you on the journey that is right for you!

What are the sessions like and when do they meet?
The schedule progresses as your journey does.  For the Inquiry phase, the sessions are brief in presentation time and more focused on group discussion and learning the basics of what it means to be a disciple and following Jesus.    As your journey continues, the sessions become more informative and present the teachings of Christ in an orderly fashion.  There are many sessions that are times of prayer, reflection, and retreat.  Typically, the meeting times are Sunday mornings after the 8:30 Mass. You are welcome to visit!
