May 2008 update on Burma relief effort at Mae Sod, Thailand

Hello to all of you!  Thanks so much for your support and prayers for Isaac during this time.  God has done amazing things in the last couple of weeks.  An update follows.  Bless you all.   ~ Julie

Isaac is doing really well.  He has been working up in Mae Sod, plus going down to Bangkok for supplies and to meet with NGOs.  We were able to talk with him on the phone yesterday. He said he still hopes to get into Burma and will be ready when the time comes but,  in the meantime, he is very busy there on the border. They are able to get stuff sent in to their contacts in Burma. It is amazing how God arranges stuff in our lives.

During the time of the rebuilding of Takuaba, Thailand after the tsunami, Isaac began working almost solely with Burmese, planting churches in the jungles in South Thailand.  Now as he works to send aid in to Burma, some of those same people are able to help him get cargo in even tho he is not able to go in himself at this point.

He has also been impacted by the great need in the border town where he is now.  It is a northern town in the province of Tak.  One could spend their entire life working among these poor and desperate people! There is hardly any work being done to help the Burmese that have escaped their country.

There are 50,000 people in the UN camps alone!  These are the Burmese Karen people who have been escaping their country as their villages are burned and they are run out. (This has been going on for years, and has nothing to do with the recent cyclone.)  Besides the Karen there are National Burmese who have fled Burma, Burmese Muslims and Buddhists, plus Thai and tribal people.

All this conglomerate of nationalities and people groups have created quite an unusual town.  Isaac said there were so many children running around and living on the street.  There are many slums in the area.  The need is so great.

Already two young boys have started following Isaac around.  They have no one to care for them and live on the street.  There needs to be shelters and children's homes for these people. Maybe since the world is aware of the need in Burma, they will extend their interest to help the people of Burma trapped without a country, without any rights along the border.

There are only two churches that he knows of in the area.  Isaac has been developing a relationship with a pastor there already, but the church is small and there is not much they can do to help the poor.

What an open door God has placed right in front of Isaac!  Isaac said he will continue to work there with the aid relief as well as do ministry among the people in this border town.

It is simply miraculous how God works in our lives.  Just a few months ago, February 7th, Isaac wrote in his newsletter:: "Please check out www.freeburmarangers.org for information regarding the situation in Burma. It is possible that I will be directly involved in the work there in the near future"

In the website he mentioned, you will see photos of the terrible things being done to these people as they are driven from their land.  They come right to Mae Sod. This is exactly where he is now!  How did he know?  He didn't but God did.

Please pray for him.

Greetings Friends!
After four and a half months of touring the U.S., I am back in Thailand. It’s good
to be home. Very good indeed. Going from one side the world to the other, from
below freezing to 100+ temperatures, from burgers to rice, ketchup to chili peppers,
from English to Thai, from driving on the right to driving on the left (with no
speed limits or other annoying traf􀏐ic regulations), its diff erent over here!
Having ful􀏐illed my commitment to the work down south, a lot of things are changing
for me too. For starters, I am shifting my base of operations back up to the
Northeast part of the country, where my father has worked for many years.
Northeast Thailand or “Isan” (ee-sahn) as it is known is home to about 20 million
people, most of whom live in rural towns and villages, most of whom have never
heard the Gospel. There are tens of thousands of villages up here, most of them
don’t have any believers at all living there, much less a church. I think there could
be a real harvest up here if things are done right. Dad and I are throwing around a
lot of ideas regarding church planting, house churches, evangelism/church
planting teams, and methods that are a bit unconventional.
In a few hours, we will be heading for Cambodia, for a conference with Church
planters there. This particular group has planted thousands of Churches in
settings similar to northeast Thailand, so we are excited to learn from their
experience.
I spent a couple of days last week out in a nearby village scouting things out
a bit. My Dad has a work going in this village already, a small house church
and a children’s outreach. I played with the kids, went fishing (with a net,
not a pole, and you get in the
water after ‘em), made some
friends, and ate some weird
food (including a dish made
by catching thousands of
tiny frogs and cooking them
whole with some herbs and peppers). You just dip into the bowl with a small
wad of sticky rice and pinch a few slippery little frogs against the rice with
your thumb, and try not to drop anything on the
way to your mouth. Tasted like salt mostly. :)
Thank you all who made my stay in the States so
pleasant. I was blessed to be able to spend time
with so many old friends, and make some new ones
as well! The fellowship of the brethren is a wonderful
thing.
Many thanks!

February 2008

I am past the halfway point of my America trip! In less than two months I will be back in Thailand! Hurrah!
I have been enjoying my time in the States. It’s been a nice change of pace, and the cold weather has been
great! (It’s pretty strange to go out and run a couple of miles and not even be sweating. In Thailand one has
to shower a couple of times a day, and then in ten minutes one is sweating again. Ah, the joys of living next to
the equator!)
My sister Janie and I spent Christmas in Kansas, in a log
cabin, with several inches of fresh snow on the ground.
Doesn’t get much better than that!
I have been preaching in a number of churches in Kansas,
Oregon, Florida, and Alabama. A lot of road miles!
God has really blessed me, and I have had a wonderful
time seeing old friends again as well as making some
new ones. It is nice to be able to preach in English for a
change; it is a whole lot easier!
There have been a couple of things on my heart these
last few months as I plan and seek the Lord for the future.
One thing I desire to do is travel more in Asia. I see trips
into Burma, India, Vietnam and possibly China on the horizon.
I also plan to become more involved with the Thai
Church and help plant some house churches, especially
with the younger people.
Todd Pruett is back in Thailand, and the work there in the South is continuing to move forward, with the Gospel
being boldly preached everywhere, both to Thai and Burmese.
Please pray for the nations, that in this critical time in history, the light of the gospel will be clearly seen through
God’s people, and that we would boldly proclaim it as we should. Send Revival Lord!!
Thank you so much for your prayers and support. May the Lord bless you richly.

that I will be directly involved in the work there in the near future.

 A message from Isaac:

Dear Friends:

This is the last letter that I will be writing from Thailand for some months.  As of October 23rd, I will be arriving in the Charlotte, NC, for my first furlough in three years!

I will be itinerating throughout the central and southeast region of the U.S. for the next 6 months or so. If you would like me to come speak at you church please contact me. I would be happy to do so.  I also would greatly appreciate your continued support during this time, as I travel and minister stateside.

It has been a while in coming, I have been talking about it for the last year, but I have always been too busy to get away. Now I have finally arrived at something a stopping point.

Sai Momo is established in the jungle (Nai See village) as the local Burmese missionary, and is doing a great job under tough living conditions. (Most Americans wouldn't last 3 days out there). There are a good number of people out there who are receptive to the gospel message.  We have been having meetings at his house and there are a several men who come. They are very hungry for the word of God and we have great discussions over scripture. They are more interested in the Bible than any other group I have worked with. We also pray for the sick regularly and there have been several healings. These last few weeks I have more and more watched Sai Momo take the role of leadership, and I am confident that he will get the job done. He is a good brother, and he defines the term "tough".

The work in Ban Nam Khem town has been primarily under the oversight of Trent Pruett, and it is also in a good place. My experience on the field is that you often go through allot of people coming and going initially, then eventually you get a good core group of faithful people who really love Jesus, and who are in it for HIM, not any other ulterior motive. Then once you have established that, you can build from there. I feel that the work here is coming into that place now. We have some precious people, who are humble, Love Jesus, and are hungry for more of Him. Praise the Lord!

When I look back at the past years here, there is so much that has happened. So many stories, so many great testimonies, so many intense difficulties and near disasters. We have baptized men and seen men walk away from God. We have had new children born to us, and we have personally dug graves and buried friends. Seen men healed of terminal illnesses, and seen them die of AIDS and alcohol poisoning. Had guns thrust in our faces, and seen men radically in bondage to the devil set free by the supernatural power of God. Heard the sounds of temple drums, and the sound of men praising the living God for the first time.

There is an intensity of Life and Death here that few in the States ever experience. This morning, before I even had a chance to drink my coffee I had to go down to the morgue and help identify the decomposing body of a man who had been brutally murdered and left in the Jungle. He was Sai Momos father in law. Our time here is short.

Ah, friends, If we could only keep before us the greatness of the call we have received, and live in obedience to the Master! The Lord desires to use us as vessels of His Life, His Salvation! It is simple obedience to preach the gospel, simple obedience to heal the sick, simple obedience to raise the dead.  Simple obedience to lay down our lives, to fast, to pray, to pour out every last drop of our inner substance at the feet of the Master. He poured out His Blood for us, how can we do any less for Him?

For Love, For Eternity.

I want to thank all of you so much for having made the work of the Gospel possible through your giving. I am not a great secretary or letter writer, I probably neglect about every possible principle they talked about in the "how to raise support" books that Globe had us read. But I want you to know that I deeply appreciate you all, your sacrifice, and your trust, your prayers and your love. You have been a vital part of what God has done in this place.

Thank you.

Isaac Hughes

I am really blessed to be with such awesome men and women,

who are 110% dedicated to the purposes and calling of God.

Thanks so much for your help.  You are a part of our team.

 The Team

Isaac moved down to the southern province of Pangna, an area that was previously destroyed by the tsunami.  He is helping to plant churches in four different areas.  Two of the services are held for Burmese speaking people and two for Thai.  There is quite a lot of Burmese living in that area as Burma borders Thailand with just a boat ride to distance us from their shores.

Slide161.jpgDSCF3966.jpg  DSCF3993.jpg

Isaac is very happy serving the Lord in the area where the tsunami destroyed much of the village and took most of the lives of women and children.  The population of survivors is largely young, strong men-those who could swim to escape the waves.  Isaac is ministering to Burmese immigrants who live in the jungles and work on the rubber plantations.  They are not received by the Thai people, but God has opened a great door for Isaac and the team there to minister to them.

They have two different groups of Burmese they are ministering to and two groups of Thai people as well.  Isaac is learning Burmese now!  Please pray for Isaac and if you would like to support him, please send to Globe and state it is for Isaac.
