course

When is the course? 

Two meetings will be held prior to the end of the fall semester. The course takes place during the first seven weeks of Winter 2010. You will commit to enroll in the IEDP course for the seven-week winter term.

Is the syllabus from last year's trip around for reference? 

Yes, but there will be content specific variations. There are policy topics in the application for your reference.

What time does it take place? 

The time of the class will be announced before students register for Winter classes. In the past, the course has met for a weekly three hour evening session.

Who teaches the course? 

The professor for IEDP 2010 is Anthony S. Chen (the Ford School of Public Policy). He will be overseeing the academic aspect of the course as well as helping with organizing the trip portion. 

What does the course focus on?

The course focuses on economic development issues . Topics will include, but are not limited to trade, food and agriculture, education, health, business development, government and institutions, history, and culture. Students will also have the opportunity to pursue other academic interests through the course.

What is the time length of the class? 

We will finalize at the class meeting. Three hours per week max.

Who takes the course? 

Everyone who is accepted to the program takes the course. To go on the trip, you must take the course. The course is also open to other interested students in graduate or professional schools.

If you are outside the Ford School, will they take your background into consideration when
assigning you a policy issue ?
 

Yes. You will have the opportunity to rank your policy preferences and your background will be considered.

What is the final product of the courses is the course?

Each student writes a policy report that synthesizes pre-trip research and in-country experience. Each student will also give a presentation during the course of the semester on their topic.
