How Should We Respond?

I have recently had the pleasure of a back and forth email discussion with William Parker PhD. He is a chemist and the head of the lab at Duke University that recently discovered a use for the appendix. William (Bill as he signs his letters) is also a man of God who has served faithfully with the youth in his church for a number of years.

Bill has asked for the opportunity to tell his side of the appendix story. I think it is important to hear him out. His article is linked below.

Apparently it didn’t take long for his lab’s research to be snatched up and used by well meaning creationists. He is concerned that conclusions are being drawn from the research that should not be drawn and it is resulting in a distortion of the truth, which is damaging to the Kingdom and is a stumbling block to the lost. 

In particular, some creationists claim finding a purpose for the appendix is evidence against evolution. I recall my initial reaction was how can finding a purpose be harmful. In my mind, after all, this was proof of design. Bill sees my view on this as equally incorrect. The findings are what they are; they say nothing of design intent and nothing against evolution.

As a scientist he makes a case that creationists should let science do its work without our interference. We should teach our kids it isn’t what we know but who that is important. A close relationship with God through the blood of Jesus and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is what will overcome doubt when science and faith appear to disagree.
