The function of custom orthoses is to support, protect and/or assist various body parts. The orthosis, plural orthoses, is named for the joint that it crosses. For instance, The knee orthosis, is called a KO, and a leg brace could be called an ankle foot orthosis (AFO) or a  knee ankle foot orthosis (KAFO).

-The KO below supports the knee by aligning the knee joint during weight bearing. Its function is to

Unload pain from knee.

  - The KAFO below supprts the weak muscles around the knee and allows the person to walk by

locking during weight bearing.

Orthoses (braces) made with carbon composite using a process patented by Glynn Orthopedic Services (GOS) create braces that are 1/2 the weight, but stronger than traditional braces. The process was created with the support of a grant from the National Institute of Health (NIH) in a study at Dartmouth College Thayer School of Engineering.
