Even Jesus

a poem (2005) by Austin Anderson

One glimpse Stupid lips
Blood in a hole Kicks
sand Wipe drool This
high school has plenty

Sorry sirs and Sideways
slurs Jagged face Take this
I Place kicked his Cracked
ass Plastic chair from there

Duck and cover Climbs on
top Whats wrong Wont tell
me she Runs and wont come
Back when I stop yelling

Wicked scars All over his
forearm and Long things
snapped in Two wrong Words
and Tables toppled into

Test time no Pencils
just Spitballs every day
Wake up I say Urine
smells like Animals

Ive torn and Ive been
bitten Broken windows
Blamed the learners Ive
run with the San children

Ive Smelled the smoke
of Burning tyres and Live
wires played with Ive Loved
and not known how to Say it

On Christmas Day in a Land
with no English I took in
Hand the wife of a Dying
man and we Both almost

Cried
