Rules & Court Bookings

THE CLUB OPERATES UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE CITY OF OTTAWA

For the benefit of all, the rules set out below must be adhered to by every member at both Glens Tennis Club locations: Grenfell Glen and Pineglen. Remember that these are your courts; your fairness, courtesy and honesty are essential in keeping the club operating successfully.

1. Courts are available for play only from 7 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. When playing, ALL players’ tags must be hung on the pegs on the reservations board in line with the time of play and the court chosen. If they are not, the court MAY BE CLAIMED by other members (with tags of course).

2. Booking of Courts: Reservations may be made only after 7:00 a.m. on the day of play and the names of all players and the date must be written on the board in chalk in the box opposite the time of play. Reservation boards will be cleaned each day by someone designated by the Club Executive.

a. Court booking is on a first-come first-play basis on the day of play and members may only make one booking of one hour duration at a time. This applies to both singles and doubles. Of course, after the match a member may book any other timeslot that is open.

b. Members scheduled to play in organized activities MAY NOT make reservations or use reserved courts on the same evening.

c. Organized Club activities take precedence over individual bookings.  Therefore, please check the list of weekly activities and tournaments (posted on the notice boards and on our website) before making your booking.  This is to avoid disappointment if you turn up to play and find that the courts are in use for group lessons, tournaments, Monday evening team tennis doubles, Thursday evening drop-in doubles or a Nepean League NCTA home match etc.

3. Courts may be used for practice by one player as long as two or more other players do not wish to use the court. A court booking is only legitimate if two persons show up to play (either must be senior or have senior privileges after 8:00 p.m.).

4. ‘Evening Play’ begins at 6:00 p.m. From 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. each evening all courts are reserved for senior members only, and only senior members may book courts. Juniors may only play after 6:00 p.m. as follows:

a. if they are playing in a scheduled club competition;

b. if club instruction is in progress, and they are participants;

c. if the courts are unoccupied and no seniors wish to play (seniors have the right to take any court);

d. if they are playing with an adult who has booked a court between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m.;

e. juniors may not book after 6:00 p.m. but may play on unused courts for one timeslot and then accede to any other juniors waiting to play;

f. up to eight (8) juniors may be designated as ‘Privileged Juniors’ and as such will have senior privileges.

5. Except during lessons, no more than four persons may share a court.

6. Only heelless soft-soled running shoes are permitted on the courts.

7. All guests are required to pay a day membership fee of $4.00 ($3.00 for juniors) or a weekly membership fee of $10.00. Temporary membership tags and passes may be obtained from the designated members of the club executive whose names are listed on the back of the court bulletin boards (visible from outside the courts). The tags and passes must be placed on the pegs during play. Players who have not paid will be asked to leave the court by members of the Club Executive. Please note that this is a provision of the City of Ottawa.

8. Non-members are not allowed on the courts at any time except as guests.

9. It is a member’s duty to be courteous on and around the courts, to leave the courts and area tidy, to LOCK unoccupied courts when leaving, and TURN OFF LIGHTS when leaving.

10. Children under the age of seven (7) are not allowed on the courts at any time, except when taking lessons and during the day when accompanied by an adult member and when no members are waiting to play.

PLEASE SHOW CONSIDERATION FOR THOSE LIVING NEAR THE COURTS BY AVOIDING UNNECESSARY NOISE, PARTICULARLY AT NIGHT, AND BY REFRAINING FROM USING THE BACKBOARD BEFORE 8:00 A.M.

TENNIS ETIQUETTE

Tennis is an enjoyable sport. Let’s keep it that way by observing a few simple rules when on or around the courts.

1                    Whether on the court playing or outside waiting to play please try to keep the noise level down. Loud conversation or comments can be both distracting and annoying to players.

2                    Remain on your court; do not walk onto a different court. If a ball gets away from you, DO NOT chase after it onto the other court. Simply wait for a stoppage in play and say ‘Ball Please’. The players on the other court will happily return your ball in exchange for freedom from your unwelcome and potentially dangerous intrusion onto their court while their ball is in play.

3                    When moving onto the courts to play, DO NOT walk across or behind the first court if it is occupied. Wait to ensure the ball is out of play and then walk around the playing area to get to the second court.

4                    Do NOT bang or scrape the court with your racquet; this damages the playing surface.

5                    Babysitting and tennis do not mix. If you must bring young children to the courts with you, PLEASE respect the presence of players on the adjacent court by doing your best to keep the children away from the courts and to minimize ‘through the fence’ conversations.

6        Rough play, physical or non-physical fighting, heated arguments, vandalism or abusive language that makes members nervous or uncomfortable, constitutes an unreasonable level of un-sportsmanship character and is not tolerated by The Glens Tennis Club or the City of Ottawa by which the tennis courts reside. Membership can be revoked.

GROUP USAGE POLICY

The Glens Tennis Club operates as a Community Tennis Club under the auspices and applicable regulations and guidelines of the City of Ottawa. This policy applies in 2012 for the use of the Club’s courts and facilities by Community-based and other Groups who are not all current members of the Glens Tennis Club. This includes Community Tournaments, coaching/teaching, and, social events.

    1    Groups wishing to use the Club facilities shall make a formal written application and must obtain the written approval of the Club President or her/his designate prior to any related activities taking place on the club courts.

    2.    All persons playing on the courts must be a current club member or alternatively must pay a guest fee of $4.00 for every day of play. All guests must sign the Club Waiver document prior to playing on the courts for the first time.

    3.    A register of all persons who play on the courts must be provided to the Club weekly for audit purposes.

    4.    The application in 1 preceding shall specify:

-          dates on which courts will be required and the duration thereof

-          the name of the person who is the Organizer of the function

-          the name of a person who will administer Waiver forms and collect daily guest fees and pay these to the Club weekly.

    5.    Play is permitted on the Grenfell Courts only and when no organized Club activity is taking place on the Grenfell Courts.

    6.    The Club court booking rules must be adhered to in that courts may only be booked on the day of play and the names of players must be entered on the booking board on a first come first served basis. NO BLOCK BOOKING RESERVATION IS PERMITTED unless permitted for a specific date in writing by the Club President or her/his designate. This ensures that Club members maintain the right to book the courts in accordance with the Club booking regulations.

    7.    For the purposes of this policy two consecutive courts may be booked when a competitive match is being played.

Violation abuse and non-adherence to this policy will be regarded as TRESPASS and any such incidents will be reported to the City of Ottawa and the City of Ottawa Police may be called immediately.
