Join us for Earth Day

posted Apr 12, 2012 1:42 PM by Glenn Gibson

Come celebrate and take care of the environment that surrounds us!

The Audubon Nature Reserve off of Eola Dr. in Salem is an island forest in an urban neighborhood. The Reserve has a diversity of trees and native plants and is a great place for bird viewing. English ivy is a constant battle at the Nature Reserve, threatening to take over the native vegetation. Please join us to put a dent in the ivy control this Earth Day.

Where: Audubon Nature Reserve, Salem, OR
When: Saturday, April 21, 9:00AM to 12:00PM

Naturescaping Workshop

posted Jan 31, 2012 4:21 PM by Glenn Gibson   [ updated Jan 31, 2012 4:22 PM ]

Glenn-Gibson Creeks Watershed Council and the West Salem Neighborhood Association are co-sponsoring, with the City of Salem, a Naturescaping Workshop on Saturday, February 25th from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Pringle Hall, 606 Church Street SE.

What is Naturescaping? According to the East Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District, "Naturescaping is beauty and function. It is the practice of designing (or redesigning) a landscape so that it reduces water use, stormwater runoff, and pollution without sacrificing splendor. Plus, it saves you time, money, and energy - all while providing a beautiful habitat for birds, wildlife, and you. The practice focuses primarily on using native plants because they are adapted to our soil and climate so they need relatively little or no watering, fertilizing, or care once established. They are also less susceptible to common garden pests and diseases, and they attract a variety of native birds and butterflies by providing food and shelter."

At the Naturescaping Workshop, City of Salem Natural Area Specialist, Mark Akimoff, will take you on a trip around Oregon to see some of the state’s most unusual and beautiful wildflowers and other native plants. This session will detail different eco types from riparian plantings to zeriscapes. The use of native plants in garden design and naturescaping will be discussed in detail.

Annual Fall Leaf Haul

posted Nov 29, 2011 5:03 PM by Glenn Gibson   [ updated Nov 29, 2011 5:05 PM ]

Bring your leaves to Wallace Marine Park to be composted this Saturday December 3, 2011, 9 am-3 pm. The Fall Leaf Haul provides a way for homeowners to drop off grass clippings and leaves (no limbs accepted), and to turn them into compost locally. Keeping leaves out of storm drains helps reduce the potential for clogged storm drains and flooding.

Also bring food or cash donations for the Marion-Polk Food Share and Parks Tradition Fund.

The SOLV September Riverside Clean-up at Wallace Marine Park

posted Sep 20, 2011 2:58 PM by Glenn Gibson

We had a tremendously successful day on Saturday, September 17th, at Wallace Marine Park. 275 volunteers turned out to spread wood chips on trails, paint curbs, and pull weeds. See the article in the Statesman Journal for more information.

Perhaps this story gives you the urge to grab your gloves, get out, and beautify our parks and neighborhoods? Ya? Well...consider joining us this weekend at the Eola-Woodhaven detention basin on September 24th from 9 AM to noon. Hope to see you there!

Make a Difference Day Ivy Pulls

posted Aug 17, 2011 4:02 PM by Glenn Gibson

There are lots of folks who know of places that are overrun by ivy and would love to get out and remove the ivy and save some trees. Now's the chance! For National Make a Difference Day 2011 on Saturday, October 22nd, groups in and around Salem will be hosting ivy pulls. If you know of a place where you would like to host an ivy pull, here's how to get involved:
  • Send me an email (ggwc@hotmail.com) with the location and time of your ivy pull and who to contact by September 30th. Be sure to have permission to pull ivy at the location you are planning.
  • During the first week of October, I will send out a list of locations and a flier to pass around or post.
  • After the event, report back to me with how many volunteers attended your event. Make sure to take pictures at your ivy pull, we'd love to see them!
If you would like to volunteer at an ivy pull Click Here to see a map of locations and times of events on October 22, 2011.
