CLIFF’S VALLEY MINISTRY LIST Published by Mt. Hill Community Church and the Cliff’s Glassy Mountain Chapel Committee Adopt A Highway Contact - Kathy Roed - 864-836-8225 email: kcroed@hotmail.com Angel Tree Contact – Liz Yacovone - 864-836-6652 email: lizyac@bellsouth.net The Angel Tree project, is a ministry for needy children at Christmas time. Cliff’s Valley residents coordinate with school teachers, guidance counselors and social workers from local elementary and middle schools, to identify the children. There are several ways to get involved: 1) You can “adopt” one or more children, and shop for their complete Christmas gifts that satisfy the children’s needs and desires based upon input from the schools. 2) You can donate directly to The Carolina Foothills Charity, where funds are then distributed in the form of food gift certificates to the same families so holiday meals can round out the happy holiday season. 3) You can volunteer to be a shopper for those who donate but are either part-time residents or cannot shop for some reason. The process concludes with bags full of presents and food gift certificates presented through the schools in early December.

Slater Marietta Tutoring Contact – Terry Eihl – 864-836-0604 e-mail: sandtreihl@bellsouth.net We always welcome new volunteers at Slater Marietta Elementary School. Tutoring could involve helping the students with reading, math, translating from Spanish to English. You will be assigned a teacher by the school coordinator based upon what grade level you feel comfortable tutoring and the subject, e.g. reading, match, etc. The grade levels at Slater Marietta are from kindergarten through 5th grade. You may discuss with the teacher how many hours and/or days she may need you. At present, most volunteers are working a couple of hours, one day a week. We find that we can make a difference in a child’s life. The Cliffs Notes

If you enjoy singing (even if only in the shower), this group would love for you to join them. A few times each month, they carpool to the Greenville and Hendersonville area visiting nursing homes and entertaining the residents with sing-along songs ranging from old familiar tunes and holiday classics to Broadway hits. This group also needs those who don't want to sing but enjoy giving a hug and encouraging words to these delightful folks. Guardian ad Litem

Travelers Rest High School Mentoring Contact – Judy Olson – 828-698-9182 e-mail: judyolson1@bellsouth.net Mentors work with At-Risk 9th graders at Travelers Rest High School. These students are at high risk of never completing high school because of stressors often out of their control. Poor academic performance and lack of motivation to stay in school result in choices that will severely affect their ability to have successful and self-sufficient lives. A mentor is an individual who comes into their lives to encourage them to make good choices and move forward with their education. The mentor is assigned to the student generally in the fall of his ninth grade year and hopefully follows him or her through to graduation. The mentor’s goal through weekly meetings is to establish a positive, personal relationship with the student and work with him or her to instill life goals and realistic expectations. To prepare for this role, mentors are trained and then meet to discuss relevant issues as a support to each other. Confidentiality is required as is an understanding of adolescent problems and a willingness to give listening support and helpful feedback when possible. |
