Earth Day Coalition’s EarthFest 2009 is the Longest Running Earth Day Celebration in the Country

On Sunday, April 19 at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

Earth Day Coalition will present our 20th annual EarthFest celebration. The event is Ohio’s largest environmental education event; it draws between 15 and 50 thousand area activists, educators, business people, and thrill seekers each spring.  The event also coincides with the 40th anniversary (or antiversary as we like to call it) of the Cuyahoga River fire of 1969, and will highlight the incredible work the city has done since then to clean up our river and bring it back to life.

EarthFest 2009 will feature well over 160 exhibitors working to create sustainable environmental solutions in areas like Clean Transportation, Alternative Energy, Green Home Improvement, and Local and Organic Foods. Other exhibit and activity areas will feature groups working in the ecological non-profit sector, environmental
science, and children’s education. Live entertainment will play all day, and everyone who attends will have a chance to earn great prizes and take home free giveaways.

Walk or Bike for the Earth: takes place in the morning of Sunday, April 19, prior to the opening of EarthFest. Registered participants receive free admission to EarthFest 2009. For those who “Walk for the Earth,” registration begins at 7:00 am at the zoo entrance. From there, participants will embark on a 5-mile nature hike through the Brookside Reservation that will loop back to the zoo. Along the way, participants will learn about the zoo’s composting and recycling projects, as well as nature preservation, water testing, and more.

Those who wish to “Bike for the Earth” will gather and register at community locations on both the east and west sides of the city. Groups will launch from these locations en route to the zoo and get in free at EarthFest once they arrive. The emphasis will be on using bicycles as transportation, and bike leaders will provide free safety checks and lessons on commuting via bicycle.

Admission: Free admission for ALL VOLUNTEERS and those who choose to ride the free-fare RTA Clean-Air bus between Public Square and the zoo, or those who wish to take part in the educational fundraiser, “Walk or Bike for the Earth.”
