Introduction
What would you think, if you were told that there is an amount of unstable material upon the Earth with an energy load that is almost a million times greater than the discharged energy of the tsunami in the Indian Ocean in December 2004? You would not believe it, would you?
However, I am going to tell you that indeed, there is such an energy load, waiting for a chance to burst and cause a world wide catastrophe. The energy quantity is so great that it could satisfy the whole energy want of the world for more than forty years, but it cannot be tamed. It is a question of the potential energy of the glacier of Greenland, kept at bay by the melting rim of the glacier. A vast ice-dam looms behind the northern horizon. Some day, an ice-shedding of giga-class will start. Repeatedly, a notion named Global Warming has appeared in the news, as well as in document films and videos, in the first years of this new millennium. There have been numerous opinions around concerning this subject. The majority of scientists, politicians and other people seem to agree that a drastic global warming is going on with its disastrous consequences. On the other hand, there are many scientists and their supporters who argue that no global warming is happening, or at least, it is questionable if it is happening. Instead, global cooling may be coming. There are people that make things in question too simple and apparently get wrong conclusions, and people that indulge in countless complicated studies with their details, do not see larger figures. What’s more, the motives of the participants of the debate do not always seem to be transparent, nor unbiased. In fact, I wonder if objective opinions are really around at all concerning the subject, in spite of many researches and observations that may be right per se, at least in some measure. However, the conclusions are a different thing, because the personality of the conclusion maker always comes along. Anyway, a massive popular movement has been set running to reduce the production of carbon dioxide by limiting the consumption of fossil fuels and increasing use of renewable energy. I don’t resist that, because it is only good to limit all glasshouse gases and wasting natural resources. It means that at the same time, all kinds of unreasonable consumption is limited, and the industry is compelled to develop new and more energy-effective technologies. Of course the companies complain, the unions complain and the general public complains, because they have to pay a little more for their consumption or curb it. The selfish homo sapience does not want to let go of anything that they have acquired. That tendency can clearly be seen in all humankind from the grass root level to the highest level of society. The poor people need help, but a sad reality is that as soon as they get reasonable sustenance, they want to become rich, and the rich people want even more wealth. Only an insignificant part of people are compliant to lower their living standard or is at least content, while other people around them want more. I have been poor in my childhood and youth, and now I only have limited resources where I can live a simple life in my humble house without remarkable material anxieties. I know something concerning the contradiction between poverty and wealth, but yet I have never envied the rich people or held a grudge against them. If I would do that, I would be inversely dependent on them. Instead, I want to be intellectually independent and keep a free and good conscience. My motive to write is not based on any ideology concerning any equality or inequality, but the right to think with my own brain, even of horrifying and distressing discoveries and to share them. My purpose is to wake people up before it is too late, if possible. Because I have noticed already that there are no really objective opinions around, therefore it is not wrong that I bring my personality and belief right alongside. Take it or leave it, read the book or leave it unread. Your choice! As an inhabitant of a subarctic area, Finnish Lapland, I had thought that we are winners, not losers, because when the global warming is progressing, we will get longer summers as well as shorter and less cold winters. The warming will decrease the cost of heating the buildings and plowing snow from roads, streets and elsewhere. It will get the trees and plants to grow more, bring new species from the south to enrich nature, give new cultivatable plants, etc. The future appeared more promising than ever. However, in the hard world those kinds of expectations are seldom nothing more than wishful thinking, as they are now too. ICE-SHEDDING OF AGES, the subject of this book, interrupted my self-satisfied thoughts in the early spring of 2005. One day it intruded my conscious mind. For some reason, I had pondered the Indian Ocean tsunami that occurred in the previous December, the coming ice-shedding of the rivers in Lapland, and the glacier of Greenland. At first, the idea that hit my mind as an invention did not have that refined importing. It was a mental picture of the glacier of Greenland, a vast ice-dam, bursting headlong into the Arctic Ocean. An apocalyptical catastrophe was looming behind the northern horizon! Had no one recognized it up until now, except me? Could it be possible, and did The Flood start that way too, about 4,500 years ago, as some theologians have counted (data varies)? An inventor, as myself, constantly asks sticky questions after getting a new subversive idea. The idea did not let me alone, so I was compelled to begin writing it down. At first I wrote a short essay of the subject but could not attract any attention. I wanted to drop the whole subject. After all, I was only one individual of nearly seven billion people, an unknown. What could I do? My arguments against someone, who seemed to insist in my subconscious mind that I should write, did not help. So, I decided to write a book, my first one, and maybe the last as well. For all my literate life, I have stored all kinds of technical and scientific data into my memory. I have used them, but cannot remember the sources of the data. There are countless numbers of them: many kinds of books and other publications, lectures, articles, news, etc., and the Internet in these last years. I have only used general and public knowledge, not wanting to violate any copyrights. I have made many of my own conclusions and calculations to support what I have said, not knowing how many people, if any, have made the same. I have taken quotations only from the Bible, the King James version. After all, this is not a scientific book, but rather a prolonged opinion. Also, I have shared some parts of my life and a number of uncommon experiences. They are told as I can remember them, not changing anything intently. My purpose has not been to present my whole biography but to take some excerpts from my life to make my background clear, namely what kind of a person is writing. This book is not just what I have thought. It is what I have actually experienced too. My life is at stake. If I remember right, the present philosophers say that the personality of an observer cannot be separated from their observations, let alone their opinions. The subjectivity is always there. Why then, should I try to escape it? I give credit to my late mother, my sole wife and woman for enduring our common life for more than four decades, and to my editor for diligently correcting my faulty English language. Kauko Loukas
