Second Chance for the Electric Vehicle

The electric car is a loser, isn’t it? Do you think so? Most people don't know the electric car history. I didn't know much of it either before I started to search for the historical facts. The most important phases of the development of the electric car are as follows, and you will be amazed to notice that the electric car history began 177 years ago from now:

1832-1839   Scottish inventor Robert Anderson worked out the first experimental electric vehicle, a carriage powered by disposable electric cells. A brilliant achievement in that pioneer time!

1835 American Thomas Davenport built the first electric vehicle, a small locomotive that could do some practical work. An equally great pioneer feat!

1859 French Physicist Gaston Planté solved the problem of storing electricity. He invented the lead-sulphuric-acid battery. That was improved in 1881 by his countryman Camille Faure who developed the lead-acid battery for automobiles.

1889  the most famous inventor Thomas Edison built an electric vehicle using nickel-alkaline batteries.

1892 William Morrison, Iowa USA, built the first actual electric automobile named Morrison that was a success. A promising start of electric autos!

1893 A small exhibition of electric cars with different makers and models was kept in Chicago. The electric automobile began to get momentum!

1895   the first auto race was held in America. It was won by an electric vehicle.

1897   The first electric taxis were seen in New York City. In Connecticut, the Pope Manufacturing Company became the first electric vehicle manufacturer. The way was wide open for the practical electric automobiles!

1900,  before and after, T.A. Edison tried to develop a powerful and long-aged alkaline battery for automobiles but failed. The problem is still giving grey hair to physicists, and the best batteries are expensive. However, the future has some good promises at its disposal, including the fuel cell electricity.

1900 The electric automobile was surfing on a big wave. Of the more than 4,000 cars produced in the United States about 30 percent ran by electricity. The number of electric cars was about one-third of all cars in the largest cities in USA. Remember that there were many steam cars too, so the electric and gasoline cars were about evenly matched. A promising scene for electric cars!

1908 Henry Ford stepped in with his Model T powered by, of course, gasoline. The sword of Brennus was swung on a cup of the equilibrium at the side of the gasoline car, and nothing could stop the massive wave of mass-produced gasoline cars that followed. Oh no!

1912 Charles Kettering invented a properly working electric automobile starter. The invention eliminated the crank starter that had caused high blood pressure, sweat, tears and broken arms to the drivers, as well as unpleasant moments to the passengers who had to listen to the drivers cursing, weeping and grinding teeth. The defeat of the electric car deepened.

1920 and hence the loss of the electric car became commercially clear due to demand of longer distances and more horsepower, affordable gasoline and failing to develop sufficiently effective and long-living batteries.

The rest is a tragedy of the demise of the electric car, a sad story about spineless politicians, greedy automobile and oil industries, and the misled public that does not know the facts behind this development. Many cosmetic attempts have been made to answer the ever-growing questioning of the ordinary people asking why nothing serious has been done to bring back the electric vehicles.

Now, some private people have taken steps to mend matters with their car conversion manuals. A wonderful purchase! A good investment!
