Girevoy Sport (also known as kettlebell or weightball sport) has evolved from military competitions within the former Soviet states in the decades following WW2. Formal rules were developed in Russian in the mid 1980's and have undergone a number of changes since. Essentially the sport involves lifting kettlebells for a period of time (usually 10 minutes) . It is a test of power endurance , and shares a number of similarities with the sport of rowing. The main events are : 1) Traditional Biathlon (Jerk of 2 bells from the snatch followed later by one arm snatch with one hand switch permitted) 2) Long cycle clean & jerk ( bell(s) swung between legs , cleaned to chest , jekred overhead & cycle repeated) 3) Snatch only with one hand switch permitted All events require a certain degree of strength , an ability to generate precise power , a smooth, crisp technique with no energy wastage i.e. the ability to lift with perfect efficiency. Additional events contested may include : 1) One arm long cycle clean & jerk 2) Relay races involving teams of lifters from several clubs or countries (e.g. 5 lifters , 3 minutes each , maximum jerks) 3) Chair press (Seated KB press) 4) Special events including juggling |
