Gilmor's Partisan Rangers

Gilmor’s Partisan Rangers, CSA, as a member of the Valley Division, strives to accurately portray the citizen soldier from Maryland.  It was formed to provide enjoyable opportunities for individuals and families to experience, learn, and in return, teach others about all aspects of life in the       mid-19th century.  Everything from the military conflicts and tactics to civilian life with its social expectations and implications, are experiences that Living Historians in the Gilmor's Rangers re-create.

After the Rangers ("The Band" as they referred to themselves) were formed as an irregular troop, they were later formed into the 2nd Maryland Cavalry under Colonel Harry Gilmor, who   on occasion, commanded BOTH the 1st and 2nd Maryland Cavalries.

We attempt to authentically portray and represent the camp life of the soldier during the War Between the States.  This unit also attempts to demonstrate to the public the many day-to-day duties and responsibilities of the common soldier in the role of the partisan ranger (i.e. Picket Duty, Officer's Call, and drill).  The troopers in the Partisan Rangers work to become proficient in the drill manual, Patten’s Cavalry Drill and Saber Exercise for both mounted and dismounted, and Patten’s Cavalry Drill, Supplement for the manual of arms. Every attempt will be made by all military personnel to try and recreate the military atmosphere in camp, with an emphasis on 1860's military customs, traditions, and protocol.  Members are also highly encouraged to do first person impressions at events, whenever possible.

Gilmor’s Partisan Rangers, CSA seeks to emulate the social customs of the 19th Century in camp and in the field.  Men are expected to be gentlemen; women are expected to be ladies; children are to be obedient and to respect their elders and shall be protected by adult members of the unit.

Prejudice has no place in Gilmor’s Partisan Rangers, neither that of race, sex, creed, or heritage.  Equal respect is to be extended to persons from all parts of the U nited States and to re-enactors regardless of the color of their uniform.  No racist language, jokes or attitudes in EITHER direction will be tolerated.

We currently are connected with the 4th Battalion Artillery, Valley Division, CSA, which participates with us in coordinated selected events, and currently owns four 12-pound mountain howitzers and an Original Field Battery gun, and with the Maryland Field Hospital performing medical and living history demonstrations at select events.
