Do-Anytime Activities

A key to math success is

memorizing basic math facts.

Practice addition & subtraction facts to 18.
Practice multiplication facts to 10.

Flashcard practice with an adult is essential. Basic math facts must be memorized and the only way to accomplish this is to practice, practice, practice at home. As a teacher, I have seen the advantages that children who know their basic math facts automatically have in math class. Multi-step problems are much easier for these students to learn.

So when parents ask how they can best help their child in math, my answer is practice addition and subtraction flashcards with your child! Your support is so appreciated and benefits your child greatly.

9's are easy!

When adding 9 to another number, just think 10.

If 10 + 7 is 17, then 9+7 is one less or 16.

Partners of 10:

Ten is a very important number in our math class this year. Partners of ten means knowing all the different ways to make ten. For example: 2 and 8 make 10. When students know the ways to make ten quickly, they are able to use this information to help them with other addition and subtraction facts!

Here's a fun math game to practice partners of 10:

Make Ten

Use a deck of cards, Take out the tens, jacks, queens, and kings. The coach lays 9 cards face up in 3 rows of three. The player then takes away pairs of numbers that make ten. It is important that the player says the pair of numbers aloud. Like "2 plus 8 equals 10." The coach fills in the empty spaces with new cards until all the cards are gone. If everything is paired up correctly all the numbers will match up.

Doubles Facts:

1+1= 2 eyes
2+2= 4 legs on a dog
3+3= 6 pack of soda
4+4 =8 spider legs
5+5= 10 fingers
6+6=12 or a dozen eggs
7+7=14 days = 2 weeks
8+8=16 legs on 2 spiders
9+9=18 wheels on a truck
