Practical Arts at Garfield High School

Practical Arts at Garfield High School offers students an opportunity to enhance their overall growth and development by becoming more technologically literate. "Technology" can be defined as: "a manner of accomplishing a task especially using technical processes, methods, or knowledge" (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). Since we live in a "high-tech" society, our courses are designed to help students survive and function productively by promoting their potential for creativity, reasoning, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities. Additionally, students will further develop skills in communication and collaboration, teamwork, leadership, and practical problem solving skills. These are all significant attributes that help individual's broaden their abilities and allow them to better understand how technology works as well as develop new ideas that help solve technological problems. Students gain experience that is invaluable to the pursuit of further education and helps develop an attitude that learning is a lifelong process.

Our program is made up of comprehensive "activity-based" educational courses that are interdisciplinary and address the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards with particular emphasis on the content areas of Technology and 21st Century Life & Careers. These courses include: Intro to Technology, Technical Drawing, Computer-Aided Design, Home Construction Technology, and two levels of Wood-Based Manufacturing Technology. Our goal is to excite and motivate the student in a unique way so that they learn, appreciate, and identify the importance of technology. One of the best ways to educate a child is to let them "learn-by-doing," and most students enjoy designing and constructing projects. Creating by using tools, machines, computers, techniques, and understanding resources, processes, outputs, and systems that manage our environment extends their capabilities. Thus, Practical Arts should be a fundamental part of an individual's education because promoting technological literacy means enhancing our societal well-being.
