WALKtober events
The Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports announces several WALKtober events to promote walking:
Ø “Walk for the Health of It” mini conference on Friday October 1, 2010.
Ø Mall walking activity on Saturday October 2, 2010
Ø Hagatna Family walk on Sunday October 3, 2010
Japan’s world famous “10,000 Step” guru, Yoshiro Hatano, will the featured guest at the WALKtober events, in connection with World Walking Day. The purpose of the WALKtober events are to help those at risk of chronic lifestyle diseases to improve health by engaging in a walking regimen.

Health Literacy Project on preventing NCD's (non-communicable diseases)
Target age group: Elementary, 3rd graders.
Goal: To present an series of entertaining activity booklets for youth, to be used in the classroom. There will be corresponding teachers notes and activity pages.
Booklet themes:
1: Circulatory System
2: Diabetes
3: Chronic lung diseases
4. Cancer
5. Violence, Injuries
6. Substance abuse, Depression
Booklet One is being completed. Series will continue depending on funding.

In May or June of each year is the Regional Fitness and
Sports for Health Summit.
People within our community are recognized who get us and our kids up and moving. These are our exercise leaders who have developed new and exciting ways to include activity, encourage participation and excel in the sports community. Please keep these categories in mind for the next year.
2010 awardees are below.
Exemplary Ethnic Recreation Program; Outstanding Village Fitness Program; Dynamic Dance Sport Program; Outstanding Group Fitness Instructor; Outstanding Personal Fitness Trainer; Outstanding Physical Education Teacher; Outstanding Volunteer Youth Sports Coach; Sports Tourism Award; Outstanding Young Athlete; Most Inspirational Athlete; Outstanding Youth Sportsmanship Award; Outstanding Youth Sport Project; Outstanding Media Contribution; Model Employee Fitness Program (Private Sector); Model Employee Fitness Program (Public Sector); and Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Get Healthy Guam Coalition coordinated a BodyWorks Training!
25 people were trained to be trainers in total, 22 for the Guam community and 3 for the Saipan community, on March 26th and 27th, 2010 at the PIC, Guam.
BodyWorks, developed by the Office on Women's Health, consists of 10 sessions for parents/caregivers of children ages 9-13. It focuses on ways to improve how the family eats, shops, cooks and moves. The goal is to help families improve their lifestyles to prevent overweight. Come back for more details soon for a calendar of BodyWorks offerings.
