General Information

The Long Island Gesneriad Society, founded in 1962,  is a chapter of  The Gesneriad Society (formerly, the American Gloxinia and Gesneriad Society). For more information about the Long Island Gesneriad Society, click here. The chapter was formed to serve the needs of gesneriad growers in Nassau and Suffolk counties and nearby Queens County, New York. Meetings begin at Noon on Saturday each month, except during July, August and January, at Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay (Nassau County).  Guests are always welcome (just tell the gate person that you're attending our meeting). Directions to Planting Fields can be found here.

Send in your membership application (PDF) now!

Gesneriad Information

Many plants that we grow belong to the family known as the gesneriaceae. African Violets, the Flame Violet and the Goldfish Plant all are gesneriads. These are also known as saintpaulia, episcia and nematanthus. Come to a meeting to learn more about these fascinating and easy-to-grow houseplants.
