4. The Power of Declaration

The Power of Declaration

You manifest what you say you want, and you also manifest what you say you don’t want.   ~ The Intenders

In the year 2000 when D-67 first became a district, our District Governor declared that we are going to achieve the Distinguished District Program. That was a time when most members were barely aware of a Toastmasters world beyond Taiwan, let alone to the very alien idea of “DCP”. Since then “being distinguished” has become our district mission. Manifesting this vision has been the same case with other newly created districts in D-59, D-79 and now D-76.

That is the magic and power of positive declaration. The public declaration of our intention brings forth actions in ourselves and in the organization which we are leading. In the act of declaring our intention, we are effectively announcing our commitment to a set of goals. When others see our unwavering commitment to the shared goals they are inspired to do their bit to help us achieve. That alignment of purpose and action is the first requisite of leadership.

It is safe to say that most of us are in district leadership because of our desire to engage in the practice of a very pure form of leadership in a volunteer organization like Toastmasters. I say “pure” because your team follows you because they “want to” and not because they “have to”. Their “want to” is directly related to how clearly your “want to” is communicated.

Therefore, district leaders, it all starts with you and the strength of your intentions. Once your intentions are declared, all powers in the universe will come forth to assist you in the manifestation.
