The George Washington Society, Ltd. is a non-political historical group dedicated to the promotion of a better understanding of George Washington and his ideals, achievements and contributions to the United States of America and humankind.

One evening in May of 1982, Edward Becker M.D. met with six of his friends at the University and Whist Club.  He proposed that they initiate an organization whose sole purpose would be to gain a more accurate evaluation of George Washington, a man mired in myth.  In subsequent meetings, the group of seven decided to establish a non-profit incorporated club and adopt as the society insignia the crest designed by Washington for use on his state carriage.  Surprisingly, it was learned that no other organization carrying his name had existed which was dedicated exclusively to his legacy.

As enthusiasm increased, more meetings and members were included. Meetings now comprise an annual toast to George Washington in February and at least one spring, summer, and fall gathering. These meetings include a social hour, a lecture by a Society member or invited guest, and a dinner of varying formality.

As the membership grew, the Society began collecting books and memorabilia relating to Washington.  This collection is now housed in the History Department of Wesley College in Dover, Delaware, as the George Washington Library.  The group also cooperates with Mount Vernon on promoting educational resources for grade school teachers and students, and has established similar programs for the public, including co-sponsoring an annual essay contest for high school students.  Occasionally, the group takes trips to places of historic interest such as Mount Vernon and Valley Forge. Members can also participate by volunteering to speak on an appropriate subject of historical interest. Society membership is open to all who are interested.

The George Washington Society, Ltd. is the first and only organization of its kind dedicated to sustaining Washington and our country’s debt to him in war and peace.  Meetings are held quarterly and feature a lecture relating to his life and achievements. Membership is not limited in any way.
