APEC Climate Center (APCC) located in Busan, South Korea, aims at realizing the APEC vision of regional prosperity by providing climate information services and technical support for better sectoral planning and reduction of economic losses due to adverse climatic conditions. APCC produces real-time operational climate prediction information based on a well-validated multimodel ensemble system with contributions from over 17 institutes in the APEC region. APCC contributes to enhancing capacity-building in the prediction and monitoring of weather and climate in the Asia-Pacific region by making available high-cost climate data and information. Countries without the capacity to produce climate predictions are able to access optimized, high-cost global climate predictions produced by APCC. Please visit the APCC website for further information about APCC at http://www.apcc21.org/eng/.

APCC is seeking qualified young scientists as short-term visiting scientists from National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) and research institutes in developing countries.

A View Towards Integrated Earth System Models Human-nature Interactions in the Marine World

IMBER focuses on the interactions and linkages between biogeochemical cycles and food webs with a view towards improving predictive capability for marine ecosystems. It is now apparent that the human dimension is an important component of marine ecosystems. Inclusion of the human aspects into marine ecosystem research is only beginning and considerable development is still required to allow meaningful interfacing of food web, biogeochemical and socio-economic systems. The inclusion of human impacts in Earth System models will allow the development of more accurate scenarios under future climate change.

Participants

This is an interdisciplinary summer school. We welcome applications from both natural and social scientists working on topics related to oceans and climate change who are interested in the challenge of crossing the barriers between disciplines.

Programme

The programme will focus on the interface between marine ecosystem biogeochemistry, physical drivers, food webs and socio-economic systems; with lectures on modelling all of these system processes, as well as model coupling and Earth System models. To help understanding there will be daily "hands-on" sessions with example models that can be usefully explored in the time available.

AOGS – AGU (WPGM) Joint Assembly
13 to 17 August, 2012
Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore

Introduction on AOGS

An international body established since 2003, the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS) aims to promote geosciences and advance its applications for the benefit of humanity in Asia and Oceania.

As these regions have been most prone to natural hazards, accounting for approximately 80% of human lives lost globally due to such catastrophes, we are committed to our calling to better address hazard related issues.

We actively contribute through publications of international journals and an annual convention that brings with it great opportunities for various geosciences fields to engage and exchange academic information, research findings and developments.

As part of the geosciences community worldwide, we also recognize the importance of developing collaborations with our global counterparts and have established good cooperation with fellow bodies including the European Geosciences Union (EGU), American Geophysical Union (AGU), International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), Japan Geoscience Union (JpGU), and Science Council of Asia (SCA).
