Session: Advances in Sustainable Barrier Materials and Systems, Geofrontiers 2011

As a Geotechnical Engineer, GeoEnvironmental and Geosynthetics Expert, you are kindly invited to send your contribution to the

CONFERENCE:                       Geo-Frontiers 2011

TECHNICAL TRACK #6:         Geoenvironmental Engineering

TECHNICAL SESSION (a):  Advances in Sustainable Barrier Materials and Systems

Description of the Topic

Sustainable materials are recently developed to replace or enhance the performance of hydraulic barriers. The objective in developing innovative barriers is to produce a barrier that is more efficient and/or less costly than existing systems.

The industry and construction sector face today an increasing problem of how to dispose of its voluminous residues. Several types of alternative materials, such as clay mixed with polymers or ashes or dredged soil, have been recently proposed to replace or amend conventional barrier materials.

Some of the residues used are constituted of large amounts of:

  - organic molecules, polymers (by-products of food industry),
  - ashes and slag (generated from incineration and melting),
  - excavated and dredged soil (from maintenance, construction and remedial works),
  - phosphogypsum (by-product of processing phosphate),
  - sludges (from chemical, paper and glass industry),
  - etc.
