International Conference Geological collections and museums: Mission and management Venue: Science Museum of the University of Coimbra, 5th and 6th June, 2009
The Conference
Geological collections are an essential approach for the investigation and divulgation of knowledge in Earth and Life History. They document processes and phenomena occurred across Earth surface, as well as the evolution of life. They are an important part of the cultural and scientific heritage of our contemporary civilization, and also serve as a way for an improved knowledge of the geologic infrastructure and the geological resources database, regarding its sustainable management. However, many of them are subjected to menaces, which are being caused as a result of the lack of resources for their study, conservation and valorisation, but also because of the scarce vocation of the tutelary institutions, when preservation is necessary.
With this conference it is intended to characterize the “state of the art” concerning the management of this kind of collections, and to identify its main opportunities and menaces. It is proposed the creation of a permanent forum of discussion and skill changes between professional participants, in order to the future establishment of orientation lines for management policies of national impact. Format Presentations by invited specialists and by the participants. Optional technical visits.
