Jim the Boy: Amazon review

I think that Jim the Boy was a clever and somewhat subtle way of taking readers through the life of a young boy growing up in North Carolina during the Depression. As the economy begins to falter now, students and other readers will be able to relate some of the things they learn about Jim's life, to what's going on in their life today. There are many different topics to explore as you learn more about Jim's life in Aliceville, where he's lived with his 3 uncles and his mother since he was born. As you follow Jim through new experiences such as getting electricity, seeing a new railroad, visiting the ocean for the first time, and meeting people from different parts, readers will be able to witness Jim growing and changing before their eyes. While the language is easy enough to read, the messages and themes of the book are much deeper than the 5th grade reading level it's associated with. Any teen or young adult would have no trouble following along and analyzing each of these simple and touching yet meaningful chapters.
