This is a ten lesson Unit plan for the novel "Jim the Boy," by Tony Earley. It is focused around tenth grade English All handouts can be found through the attachments at the bottom, or through any hyper-links. "Jim the Boy" is a sweet story of 10-year-old Jim Glass growing up in Aliceville, North Carolina during the depression. Although Jim struggles with having no father, his three uncles and his mother, along with the rest of the town, give Jim the support he needs. In Jim the Boy, readers are taken through Jim's life as he grows by experiencing new things and discovering new ideas. Although this book is a 5th grade reading level, the tone of the book, and the subjects explored in it are appropriate for a 9th grade regular English class. It would be a good book to introduce into a tenth grade class because the material is mature enough for more advanced students to work with, and the reading level makes it easier for students to read it and appreciate it's language and messages. Reading level: Approximately 5th-6th Grade reading level based on the Lexile Chart. |
