One of the most significant threats to human health is genetic disease. There are over 6,000 genetic disorders that can be passed from parent to offspring, many of which are fatal or severely debilitating. A genetic disorder is a disease that is caused by an abnormality in an individual's DNA. Abnormalities can range from a small mutation in a single gene to the addition or subtraction of an entire chromosome or set of chromosomes.
Most people are related to or know at least one person who has been diagnosed with a genetic disorder. The most alarming fact is that often people carry within their DNA a gene that causes a genetic disorder and are unaware until a family member is diagnosed. Being diagnosed with a genetic disease can be an extremely difficult and confusing time for both the patient and their family. There are often many unanswered questions and pieces of misinformation about the disease. Through research and education genetic researchers and counselors can begin to both treat and prevent genetic disorders.
