XYY Syndrome By Tom Bliss

Description:

XYY syndrome is a genetic disorder where a person has an extra Y chromosome. XYY syndrome is also known as Jacob's Syndrome and Klinefelter's Syndrome.  The typical female human has two X chromosomes and the typical male human has one X chromosome and one Y chromosome.  A person with XYY Syndrome has an X chromosome and two Y chromosomes.  An average of one in one thousand boys will have this syndrome. This syndrome only occurs in males. Adult Males with this syndrome will have 2/3 chance of their child being a boy instead of a 1/2 chance. A man with XYY syndrome's children will probably not have any serious medical problems and most likely will not have XYY Syndrome.

Typical Symptoms Include:
  • Severe acne
  • Excessive Growth (on average 7 extra centimeters than expected)
  • Lower IQ (By 10-15 points as compared to there siblings)
  • Excessive aggression
  • Developmental delays
  • Large Hands and Feet

Treatment:

Because of XYY Syndrome not being a serious syndrome, not much research is being done. No cure has been found, but not many people with XYY Syndrome care because the symtoms are not serious. There is some research at the Study of Hellenic Naval Medicine. One of the reasons there is no cure is because currently, the only way to get rid of the extra Y chromosome is surgery on every cell.

Research:

The first discovery of a man with this syndrome was by Avery A. Sandberg and his colleagues in 1961. This syndrome was the last of all the common sex-chromosoam diseases to be discovered. Avery A. Sandberg discovered this at Roswell Park Memorial Institute in Buffalo, New York. Avery found a forty-four year old male who was six feet with average intelligence. This man had a daughter with Down Syndrome. After studying the man, they concluded he had an extra Y chromosome.  Although Avery A. Sandberg discovered this syndrome, he never found a cure.

Current Events:

Recently there has been some work on this syndrome at the Office of Study of the History of Hellenic Naval Medicine in Athens, Greece.

Genetics:

People do not inherit XYY syndrome. It is caused because of an error within sperm cells. This causes an error and the chromosome doesn't split correctly. This is called Nondisjunction. Because of this error an extra y chromosome is created. Sometimes this error prevents the pregnancy, but usually it will give the child XYY Syndrome. This syndrome is considered a chromosomal aberration.

This is a picture of the XYY Syndrome Karyotype. Notice the red arrows indicating the extra y chromosome from http://www2.geneticsolutions.com

A Day in the Life:

A day in the life of a person with XYY syndrome wouldn't be too challenging. A day in the life would be like anyone his age. The only difference is he would have to deal with anger issues, acne problems, lower IQ than siblings and possibly development delays.

Vocabulary:

Nondisjunction- An error were during meiosis when the cell is trying to split that makes an extra y chromosome

Chromosome- Special DNA that carry the genes in a linear order

Syndrome- a group of symptoms that means you have a disease or disorder

Condition- a state of health

Development Delays- A Nicer way of Saying Mental Retardation

Disadvantages- An unfavorable circumstance

Karyotype- the chromosomes of a cell

Challenging- difficulty in a job

Chromosomal Abberation- A syndrome where you have an extra or a missing Chromosome
