Muscular dystrophy is a disease in which the muscles in your body get weaker and weaker and eventually stop working.
Muscles and membranes need many different kinds of proteins to stay healthy.
The protein involved in Muscular dystrophy is not protein from food, but protein your body makes by itself .
Your genes tell your body how to make the proteins your muscles need. But in people with MD,
these genes have wrong information or leave out important information,
so the body can't make these proteins properly. causing muscular dystrophy
different kinds of MD
- Becker
- Duchenne
These are the two most common forms of MD
Treatment......
"There is no specific treatment to cure or halt MD. Physical therapy, exercise, orthopedic appliances (such as braces and wheelchairs),
or corrective orthopedic surgery may help to preserve muscle function and prevent joint contractures as much as possible and improve quality of life.
Steroids have been used to slow disease progression, but do not effect the final outcome.
Identification of the specific genes responsible for the various types of MD has led to extensive research on gene and molecular therapy, but all such treatments are still experimental." (1) ![]() Research
"The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) supports a broad program of research on MD. The goals of these studies are to increase understanding of MD and its causes, develop better therapies, and, ultimately, find ways to prevent and cure it. The NINDS and its sister institutes, the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), lead the MD research efforts conducted at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or at grantee institutions throughout the country." Current events
There has been a breakthrough cure for one form of MD called Duchenne Md. to learn more about this click on the link below;
Symptoms:
All forms of MD have one thing in common, Muscular Weakness.
LIVING WITH MD
i do not know what it must be like to live with muscular dystrophy. You are confined to a wheelchair or other walking device your whole life. you cannot go outside and you have trouble moving your body.
this would be very hard to live with.
Vocabulary
- Membranes, A thin, pliable layer of tissue covering surfaces or separating or connecting regions, structures, or organs of an animal or a plant. -Contractures, An abnormal, often permanent shortening, as of muscle or scar tissue, that results in distortion or deformity, especially of a joint of the body.
Other facts
many theorys to muscular dystrophy state that stem cells might be able to replace infected mucles.
