What research is being done about Alzheimer's disease? What is the treatment for Alzheimer's Disease?

Although there is no treatment or medicine that could stop the progression of Alzheimer's Disease, there are medicines that will slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Including, Aricept, EXELON Patch, and  Namenda. Researchers have found that the Gingko Biloba herb might be away to cure or prevent Alzheimer's disease. Researchers also made a vaccine that could be shot into anyone who has Alzheimer's. It would train the body to fight the compounds that lead to brain problems. Research was stopped though because this vaccine was causing swollen brains. Researchers also found that Statins (cholesterol reducing medications) which had a positive effect on several people. The patients could relate to the sounds, people, colors, birthdays, etc. But this method hasn't been proven in experimental research. Researchers also found that asprin and acetaminophen had some effect on the patients. One treatment that has been proven untrue is Hormone replacement.

What current events are there about Alzheimer's disease?

In Cambridge, Massachusetts, "MIT engineers identified protein structures key to Alzheimer's disease, an important step toward the development of new drugs that could prevent such structures from forming."1 Some new drugs were found that might help almost stop the disease. There aren't a lot of current events about Alzheimer's Disease, but they are finding drugs that might find the cure or close to the cure of Alzheimer's Disease. In the NY times there was an article about Alzheimer's Disease. It was about ways to stop Alzheimer's before the patient gets the disease. It isn't positive that it will work yet but this is how they would do it. The doctor would give the patient a drug before the patient got Alzheimer's and the patient wouldn't get Alzheimer's Disease.

Genetics about Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's Disease is actually a mutation and a chromosomal aberration in some cases of Alzheimer's. So I couldn't find a karyotype for Alzheimer's. Alzheimer's disease can be caused by both. Alzheimer's Disease isn't a single-gene disorder. Alzheimer's might mutate because of lack of Glucose but the Feinberg School of Medicine is not sure.

A Day In Life for an Alzheimer's Patient.

A day in life for an Alzheimer's Patient is very frustrating. First the person can't remember a lot about their past life or where anything is. Second the patient needs someone to be with them at all times. Someone with Alzheimer's Disease must stay with someone at all times or they could get lost. The patient doesn't feel much but the loved ones get really sad. The Alzheimer's Patient feels frustrated day to day. The patient can't really say how they feel so they have someone explain how he/she feels.

Vocabulary

Senile - showing a decline or deterioration of physical strength or mental functioning, esp. short-term memory and alertness, as a result of old age or disease.
Aberration - the act of departing from the right, normal, or usual course

Great pictures. Don't forget to cite where they came from. Before the final project is due have some one proof read the final draft. There are a few minor errors.

Carinn C - Jan 20, 2009 5:16 PM

those pictures are PERFECT, but you might want to think about making the headings more intertwined in a way. with all of the colors in the pictures, it gets sort of confusing as to what are the headings. Does that make sense? ya, i think it does. other than that GREAT WORK, keep it up dude!

Annette Dolby - Jan 21, 2009 10:38 AM
