 This lovely macaw sculpture is perfectly perched on an exquisite calcite mineral specimen. The sculpture is carved from deep blue sodalite, whose name reflects its sodium content. Actual crystals of sodalite are rare, however twelve-sided crystals have been found in the lavas of the Vesuvius volcano in Italy. This macaw is carved from a high grade piece of sodalite that has vitreous luster, making it appear as though he is ready to take flight. His carving is highly detailed oriented, emphasizing the beautiful striations of this highly polished sodalite.
His beak is carved from hand-ground, highly polished agate. Every piece of agate is an original, no two are alike. Agate takes approximately 80 million years to form and is one of the hardest minerals on earth. His feet is solid gold plated. The remarkable structure of this base is calcite. Calcite occurs deep within limestone caves and is enriched by the composition of calcium carbonate and complex crystals. the crystals of this particular calcite geode are highly birefractive, meaning the refraction of light gives off rays of light.
