Introduction
In this section of the wiki we will attempt to compile a list of sampling gear used to collect plankton. Altho the title of this page is 'plankton nets' we will initially include any gear used to capture plankton, i.e. nets, bottles, recorders, pumps, etc. Our objective is to create a standardized vocabulary list of terms that we can associate with plankton nets. The steps that we will follow to achieve this objective are as follows:
SeaDataNet Hierarchy
To get a catalogue of SeaDataNet go to http://seadatanet.maris2.nl/v_bodc_vocab/welcome.aspx.
Plankton nets come under the following SeaDataNet Data Production Tool classification:
Device category type: "Sample collector" (L051)
Device category: "Plankton nets" (L22)
Device names The device category type vocabulary = sample collector is L051. This list contains the following terms:
Our aim is to feed the GE-BICH sampling gear vocabularies into these catalogues of devices. For plankton nets the list will be L22.
The discussion of sampling gear has led to a discussion of collection methods and definitions of terms such as vertical, horizontal and/or oblique hauls. See the collection_methods _review.doc attachment below.
The file Gear compiled lists.xls contains gear lists from WOD, BioChem, WHOI, BODC, and OBIS Canada. If you have access to other lists please add to this spreadsheet. |
The file "plankton_nets.xls" contains the nets and net systems described in Wiebe and Benfield (2003) paper. We are proposing to use this as a starting point for our list of controlled vocabularies for plankton net gears.
The first 4 columns of the spreadsheet are protected as they contain the published references, names and definitions used in the Wiebe and Benfield's paper which we want to keep as reference. The rest of the spreadsheet can be updated. It contains the following columns:
- a "category" column which is currently used to store the classification used in the Wiebe and Benfield’s paper (see definitions in the separate sheet <legend> in the spreadsheet) but which can be altered to accommodate a different classification.
- a “keep?” field in case any reviewer feel that we should not keep that particular record
- a comments field
- a proposed short name for submission to SeaVox
- a proposed alternative name for submission to SeaVox
- a proposed definition for submission to SeaVox
- link to images if required
- external links if required
Contributors can add new records and modify the non-protected fields.
For gears which are very specific, it may be ok to adopt the very detailed Wiebe & Benfield’s definitions. However, for gears which have been used more widely (Nansen net, etc), their name might have become a common usage for similar piece of gears with slightly modified dimensions. In those cases we will need to create new descriptions which exclude size information unless these are standards of course. We might also want to add more generic entries for say a Bongo net or a Ring net.
