QA/QC workshop

GE-BICH 1st Workshop on Quality Control and Quality Assurance of Chemical Oceanographic Data Collections – Oostende, Belgium, 8-11 February 2010, sponsored by IOC/IODE.
During its fourth Session, GE-BICH recommended that a workshop on QA/QC of chemical oceanographic data be organised in order to establish clearer guidelines and define a strategy to better standardise QA/QC procedures at the data centre level.

On 8-11 February 2010, 19 scientists with expertise in the management, production or compilation of chemical data attended this first workshop. The focus was on dissolved inorganic nutrients and dissolved oxygen.

The workshop's main objective was to evaluate existing procedures and recommend a minimum set of data quality control and reporting procedures for dissolved inorganic nutrients and dissolved oxygen from discrete water samples. Using these variables as examples, we focused on 4 main areas:
  • Quality control checks and procedures
  • Common quality control issues
  • QC flags schemes and strategy
  • Units and metadata requirements for data reporting and exchange

The workshop report is available from the IODE website <Report>.

Presentations by workshop participants and the initial workshop circular (GEBICH_QC_workshop_final-1.pdf) are attached below.
