GCAC Programs

A 2009-10 Season Brochure is available. Copies may be obtained at the public library on Mt. View Street, the Davis House Bookstore, and the South Branch Depot (Convention and Visitors Bureau in South Petersburg).  If you wish one by mail, please email us at the address at the bottom of this page.
 
GCAC is proud to host the New Harmonies multimedia exhibit from Smithsonian Institution & Museum on Main Street from December 4 through January 24 at the Landes Arts Center. Watch for announcements of hours of operation and special mini-events tied to this "Celebrating American Roots Music" exhibit. Events on our program that expand the themes of the New Harmonies exhibit are indicated with "NH."
 
Fall & Early Winter Schedule
 
"NH" Moatstown Choir, Saturday, September 12, 7 p.m., Landes Arts Center Harr Theatre. Community Sponsors: Patti and Keith Wolfe. Gospel music old and new. Donations accepted.
 
 ** Chief Cornstalk: A History Alive! Enactment. Tuesday, October 6, 2009, 7 pm, Landes Arts Center Ours Gallery. Community Sponsors: Charles & Ben Halterman, George & Tyler Halterman. Dan Cutler portrys the Shawnee chief who carried out raids in the Greenbrier Valley during Pontiac's Rebellion of 1763, and fought in the French and Indain War. Donations accepted.
 
  "NH" & * Mick Souter's ALL ABOARD THE IRON HORSE. Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009, 8 pm, Landes Arts Center Harr Theatre. Community Sponsor: Summit Community Bank. A musical tour of America's railroad history and its special impact on West Virginia. Grant County Convention & Visitors' Bureau (*1-304-257-9264) offers a package consisting of a train ride with dinner on board plus preferred seating for this event held in the luxurious comfort of the Landes Arts Center. Performance onl lickets are sold at the door $5 adults and $3 student.
 
"NH"  Lucy West: A Talk on Early Music of the South Branch Valley. Thursday, November 5, 7 pm, Landes Arts Center, Ours Gallery. Community Sponsor Davis House Bookstore. Fisher WV native Lucy West will share her keen interest in the music of the South Branch Valley back to earliest historical records. Free & open to the public.
 
Autumn Favorite Poem Day, Moomau Public Library, Sunday, November 15, 2009, 2 - 3:30 p.m.. Informal read and share event. Listeners welcome. Appropriate for all ages.

A traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution, sponsored by tghe WV Humanities Council, Inc. Watch for ads about guided tours and special mini-events. Free admission.
 
"NH" & * & ** Bill Wellington Exhibit December 7 until date to be announced. Landes Arts Center, Ours Gallery. Public library hours as indicated for New Harmonies above. Community Sponsor Geary & Geary Inc. Multimedia exhibit by folklorist Bill Wellington featuring photos, recorded music and memorabilia about Grant County and area musicians. The work is the product of a interviews and recordings done during a 1978-79 residency in Grant County. Free admission.

Winter and Spring Events
 
"NH" Celebrating WELD with Next Exit. Community Sponsors Duke and Linda McDaniel. Thursday, Jan. 7, 7:30 pm, Landes Arts Center, Wellington Gallery. Class rock 'n roll by Next Exit with Rick Bergdoll, Ed Kesecker, and Frank Skavenski followed by a mini-museum exhibit of radio station WELD's equipment from the early days, posters, album covers, records and reminiscing with WELD staff. Donations accepted.
 
"NH" American Spirituals: Five Hits and a Miss plus the PHS Chorus. Community Sponsors Betty Moomau, Becky Moomau, Betty Moomau, and Sarah Moomau. Thursday, Jan. 21, 7 pm, Landes Arts Center, Harr Theatre. Five Hits and a Miss and the PHS Chorus presents an evening of American spirituals; Rev. Bill Brown explains the tradition of shape-note singing and American music heritage. Donations accepted.
 
Painting Workshop for Beginners with Instructor Thisbe Cooper. Community Sponsor Water St. Gallery. Saturday, Feb. 20, 9 to 4 and Sunday Feb. 21, 2 to 5. Landes Arts Center. Learn the elements of drawing and techniue in acrylics in an intensive beginners' art workshop. Registration and materials $45 for non-members. Members pay a materials fee of $20. Bring your lunch and snacks.
 
Spring Favorite Poem Day. Moomau Library Community Room. Informal gathering of poetry lovers - listeners, readers and writers welcome. Date and time to be announced.
 
* Stephen Ballou: Cello Workshop, Lecture, and Concert. Community Sponsors Dr. and Mrs. James Kim, Mr. and Mrs. G.R. Ours, Jr. Mr. Ballou's hosts in the community are Norvell Jones and Robert Reecer. Workshop/Lecture Friday, May 21, 7:30 pm; Concert Saturday, May 22, 7:30 pm, both at the Landes Arts Center. Adults $5 & students $3. Mr. Ballou, an associate member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, New York City, since 1987, is an acclaimed solo recitalist and teacher.

  Oral History Project: Ongoing recording and archiving the spoken histories of local people. If you would like to volunteer to help with the project, call 304-257-2144.
