The Symbol of the Sekai Dentokan Renmei WHAT IS DENTOKAN INDONESIA? Dentokan Indonesia is the Indonesia Branch organization of Sekai Dentokan Renmei. It was founded by Ben Haryo who is a student of Sekai Dentokan Renmei founder, Mr. Roy Hobbs. The Dentokan Aiki Jujutsu was formed from Hakko-ryu Jujutsu, a traditional Japanese Jujutsu style. WHAT IS AIKI JUJUTSU? According to Aikido Journal Encyclopedia, Aiki Jujutsu (written in Japanese Kanji as below): 合気柔術 http://www.aikidojournal.com/encyclopedia?entryID=31 is described as: "1. A term used occasionally to refer to the jujutsu form taught by Morihei UESHIBA in the 1920s and early 1930s. The Daito-ryu scroll given to Minoru MOCHIZUKI by Ueshiba in June 1932 bears an Aiki Jujutsu seal. 2. An abbreviated term used loosely to refer to the DAITO-RYU AIKI JUJUTSU of Sokaku TAKEDA. Its use in this sense is most frequent outside of Japan. 3. Aiki techniques performed in a hard, jujutsu-like manner used in contrast to the softer, rounded techniques of aikido. According to Mr. Roy Hobbs in one of his interviews, he call his art Dentokan Aiki Jujutsu to show that this art were based on the techniques originated with the Daito-ryu Aiki Jujutsu, passed through Hakko-ryu and finally to the Dentokan system. This is to differentiate between his methods, which are based on Aiki Jujutsu, with other methods of Jujutsu. *Important Note! Dentokan Aiki Jujutsu of Mr. Hobbs has no organizational relations with the Mainline Daito-ryu Aiki Jujutsu under Mr. Katsuyuki Kondo, or other Daito-ryu systems! HISTORY OF HAKKO-RYU AND DENTOKAN AIKI JUJUTSU (please visit http://www.dentokanhombu.com/2.0/history.htm for complete history). The history of this art began in the late 19th century. At that time, masters of Jujutsu who formerly teach only family members and the nobilities has began to teach their martial arts to common people. One of the most famous master was Sokaku Takeda Dai Sensei, the greatest master of the Daito-ryu Aiki Jujutsu style. One of Sokaku Takeda's foremost student was Yoshiji Okuyama Sensei, a master of Oriental Medicine. Okuyama sensei
received his Daito-ryu teacher’s license from Takeda in 1936 and opened his
first Jujutsu school in 1938. In 1941, he founded his own expression of the martial art, called Hakko-ryu. It was a style
that combined the physicaltechniques of Daito-ryu Aiki Jujutsu with elements
of oriental medicine. Hakko-ryu translates to "Eighth Light Style". This name was based upon the belief that there is an eighth band of light in the spectrum. This band of light is much weaker than the others, almost invisible, but actually very strong, like x-rays. As an analogy, Hakko-ryu’s techniques may appear weak, but are actually strong. It is quite common to confuse a lack of big sweeping motions with a lack of power. Nothing could be further from the truth. Small, direct, well-executed techniques are normally far more effective than those consisting of a great deal of wasted motion. This is true in virtually all martial arts. Hakko-ryu took on the
characteristics of "No Challenge, No Resistance, and No Injury".
It was a move away from the brutal combative approach normally
associated with Daito-ryu and its various offshoots. This
approach was reflected in the Jujutsu taught at the new Hakko-ryu
Hombu Dojo established in Omiya, Saitama Prefecture, Japan, in 1947. The techniques of Hakko-ryu (and thus Dentokan Aiki Jujutsu) are based on that of the Daito-ryu, but heavily modified to allow the defender to defend him/herself without having to kill the attacker. The syllabus of Hakko-ryu includes: (but not limited to) Throwing techniques, joint locks (especially wrist locks), vital-point striking techniques, choking/strangling techniques, weapons techniques and many more. Mr. Roy Hobbs studied Hakko-ryu Jujutsu at the Japan Hombu Dojo in the early 1980s, and received his teaching license (called "Shihan Menkyo") from Okuyama sensei in 1983. Mr. Hobbs returned to Japan in the late 1990s (1997-1999) and continued his Aiki Jujutsu training with Yasuhiro Irie sensei, who was Okuyama sensei's senior student. Irie sensei separated himself from the mainline Hakko-ryu in 1987 after the death of Okuyama sensei. Irie sensei called his version of Hakko-ryu as "Kokodo Jujutsu". From Irie sensei, Mr. Hobbs received the certificate of "Menkyo Kaiden", which means that he had completed all the training in the system. With Mr. Irie's permission, Mr. Hobbs created his version of Hakko-ryu, called Dentokan Aiki Jujutsu. This form of Jujutsu preserves all the techniques of Hakko-ryu Jujutsu and also includes techniques from several other Jujutsu systems. The Sekai Dentokan Renmei is a registered member of Zen Nihon Sogo Budo Renmei (SOBUREN), headquartered in Kyoto, Japan. By extension, this means that our GBI Club organization, as a part of the Dentokan, is also recognized by the Soburen.
In 2004, Mr. Hobbs gave permission to Ben Haryo, his student (who at that time had reached Sandan/Third Level in the syllabus of Dentokan/Hakko-ryu) to spread the martial art of Dentokan Aiki Jujutsu in Indonesia. Thus Ben Haryo became the first Yudansha and area representative of Dentokan Aiki Jujutsu in Indonesia. In 2009, Mr. Hobbs sent Mr. Andy Roosen, one of his senior student, to conduct a seminar of Goshin Jutsu which consist of applications from Dentokan Aiki Jujutsu & Okinawan Karate techniques, in Jakarta, Indonesia. This was the first ever Dentokan Aiki Jujutsu seminar in Indonesia and signifies the full acceptance of Dentokan Indonesia as a part of Sekai Dentokan Renmei. |
