The GBHT is a charity which has been set up in memory of our friend Gareth, who died earlier this year. As history was one of Gary's great passions, the trust will help disadvantaged children to take history trips.
Six old friends, all of whom went to school with Gary, cycled from Bristol to Edinburgh over the course of five days to raise money for the Trust (GBHT) in August 2008. On the way, we doubtless passed lots of historical sites.
Having grown up together in Oxford, we've all since moved away - to Bristol, to Manchester, to Edinburgh, even Washington DC. Cycling from one house to another seemed like a good way to spend some time together, and raise some money for the Trust. We thought that cycling to the USA was probably beyond us, so luckily our US-based friend came over to join us.
Unfortunately, as the GBHT has only been established very recently we are still waiting for the Charity Commission to complete the formalities of registering it, which means that we are as yet unable to create a sponsorship donations website with justgiving.com. We hope to be able to do this very soon, as it is the best and easiest way of collecting sponsorship, and obtaining gift aid on it.
In the meantime, you can contribute by cheque, made out to The Gareth Butler History Trust and sent to GBHT, Flat 9, 37 Anson Road, London, N7 0RB. If you are a UK taxpayer please state you are and include your address as well as the words "I would like to Gift Aid this donation".
The 425 miles from Bristol to Edinburgh took us five days, averaging 85 miles a day. (We love the stats.) You can see an account of each day of the trip below.
