Dear Commissioner, Scouters and Members of Gauteng Scouting,
In response to the numerous requests and suggestions on the need to be actively marketing scouting, and increasing our visibility in the media, I am pleased to announce, following the approval of the February provincial warrants meeting and the CSC, the appointment of Mr Gavin Penkin to the role of APC(Marketing) in Gauteng. Gavin will report directly to me, and will be responsible for the following tasks in the province: · Update and encourage Scouters to join the GTScouters mailing list. This needs to become the primary communication between Province and the Scouters. Will need to check that every group has a number of people on this list. · Keep the Provincial Facebook site current and up to date. · Create a Facebook page for youth members. (under 18) and source and put out content for the site. · Updating of Gauteng Web site with current event and organisational information as well as useful content. · Encourage and assist all groups to have a person handling PR and marketing. This assistance will come in the form of prepared release templates, copy review and distribution of information either electronically or otherwise. · All area events to have a PR and marketing person on their committees. This role would initially be performed by the APC and then a team grown around the individual. · Write general Scouting articles which can be published in all print media. · Make contact with Journalists to secure articles on the Web, Print, TV, and Radio. · Use an external PR company (already secured at no cost) to distribute press releases and articles. · Set up a Blackberry group for Scouts. · Set up Scout Chat groups on Mxit and other similar types of chat.
The aim is to make Scouting visible, to be present at all big events with Scout Branding.
Gavin has also been tasked with assisting groups in getting the message out about their events and big happenings – so if you want to advertise your group or get input he is your man.
Gavin is also putting together a marketing strategy and guidelines document for groups who would like to get out there but aren’t sure how.
