FIRST LEGO League (FLL)

FIRST LEGO League is an international program for children ages 9-14. It combines a hands-on, interactive robotics program and a research presentation with a sports-like atmosphere. Teams consist of up to 10 members and focus on such things as team building, problem solving, creativity, and analytical thinking. Each September FLL provides teams around the world with an annual Challenge. The Challenge is based on a set of real-world problems facing scientists today. It has two parts: a robot game and a project. In the robot game teams design, build, program, and test autonomous robots that must perform a series of tasks, or missions. In the project, teams conduct research and create a technological or engineering solution to an aspect of the Challenge and present that solution.

This year’s theme, Power Puzzle, asks teams to explore how energy production and consumption choices affect the planet and our quality of life today, tomorrow, and for future generations. As part of the Challenge Project, the FLL teams have to do an energy audit of a community building and share the results with the community.

Champion's Award

FLL Teams compete to demonstrate their strengths in the four categories of robot performance, robot design, challenge project and team work. The Champion’s Award is the most prestigious award that any team can win. This Award celebrates the ultimate success of the FIRST mission and FLL Values and the teams considered for the Champion’s Award are those that perform well in all the four categories, which are equally weighted. The award measures how the children inspire and motivate others about the accessibility, excitement, and wonders of science, technology, and engineering while demonstrating respect, encouragement, and continued gracious professionalism. The winning team receives the honor of serving as a valued role model for FIRST and the FIRST LEGO League Program.

FLL World Festival

The FLL Power Puzzle World Festival will be held at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta during April 2008. For the World Festival, FLL will host up to 84 teams from 43 countries and global regions. Teams will participate in a 2½ day tournament celebration of their robotic and challenge project accomplishments.
