The Folsom GATOROBYTES, a FIRST LEGO League (FLL) robotics team won the Teamwork Award at the recently concluded Children’s Climate Call (CCC) European Open FLL Championship Tournament. This event was held at the Bella Centre in Copenhagen, Denmark from May 1 to May 3, 2009. More information about this event can be found at ww.childrensclimatecall.org. The team was also nominated as one of the top three teams for the Research Quality Award. The website also describes the Teamwork Award as follows: “Team work is critical to succeed in FLL and is the key ingredient in any team’s success. This award is presented to the team whose members best demonstrate extraordinary enthusiasm and spirit, exceptional partnership, the utmost respect for their own teammates, and support and encouragement of fellow teams. They demonstrated confidence, energy, strong problem solving skills, and great group dynamics.” The European Open Championship hosted about 50 teams from 29 countries and 6 continents bringing together about 700 participants. All participating teams qualified through their respective national and regional FLL competitions. The GATOROBYTES won the First Place Champion’s Award at the 2008 Climate Connections Northern California FLL Championship tournament (on January 25th at Newark Memorial HS, Newark, CA) to qualify for this event. Teams participated in a 3-day tournament celebration of their robotic and challenge project accomplishments. This year’s theme asks teams to embark on an exploration of the earth's climate in the Climate Connections Challenge! It encourages the kids to discover the links between science, people, resources and communities and unearth how we learn about past climates and delve into questions surrounding our current and future climatic conditions. Northern California FLL Championship (January 2009) - The Folsom GATOROBYTES won the First Place Champion’s Award at the recently concluded 2008 Climate Connections Northern California FLL Championship tournament (on January 25th at Newark Memorial HS, Newark, CA). The one-day event included 64 teams from all over Northern California that qualified for this event through 12 qualifiers. There were a total of 295 teams in this region. With this Champion’s Award, the Folsom GATOROBYTES now have an invitation to attend the European Open Championship in Copenhagen, Denmark (May 1-3, 2009). We acknowledge and thank you for all your support, which helped us with this achievement!
Champion’s Award : FLL Teams compete to demonstrate their strengths in the four categories of robot performance, robot design, challenge project and team work. The Champion’s Award is the most prestigious award that any team can win. This Award celebrates the ultimate success of the FIRST mission and FLL Values and the teams considered for the Champion’s Award are those that perform well in all the four categories, which are equally weighted. The award measures how the children inspire and motivate others about the accessibility, excitement, and wonders of science, technology, and engineering while demonstrating respect, encouragement, and continued gracious professionalism. The winning team receives the honor of serving as a valued role model for FIRST and the FIRST LEGO League Program Additional Information
El Dorado Hills Scrimmage- On January 11th we went to a local scrimmage in El Dorado hills. While running the robot one of our teamates accidentally pushed the bicycle, insulation, and laptop into the green grid area so that he could clear the way for the robot. During scoring, the judge scored us for having the bicycle, insulation, and laptop in the green grid area. Later once our team learned of this mistake, we decided to go back and talk to the judge and have the points deduct the points from our score, which put us in 2nd place. Chico State Qualifier- On December 7th we went to Chico for our state qualifier. When we first ran our runs, we ran into a lot of problems and we ended up with a score of 55. After that run we regrouped and figured out what the problems were and then we scored 165 on the second run. On the third run we recieved a 145 but the 165 on our second run was enough to give us a 1st place. We also won 1st place in Robot Design. We were one of the three teams that qualified to go to the NorCal state tournament. |
Special Thanks To Our Sponsor for Event Prizes The team will be demoing the robots at on May 16, 2009 at the Get W.E.T event
