Blogging

A blog is a website comprised of "posts" or articles written by the author that appear in reverse chronological order. They began as journal/diary concepts but have evolved into multimedia tools with the ability to include hyperlinks, images, audio, videos and sometimes even documents.

The core value of blogs are their collaborative uses. Each post allows others to reply to the content via a comment function. In this way, blogs become one of the earlier Web 2.0 tools, that encourage participation in creating content rather than surfing for existing content.

Educational Application

  • Engaging to students, especially those that may not otherwise participate in a classroom setting.
  • Provides more opportunities to read and write, but in a less formal, stressful vehicle.
  • Encourages collaboration and discussion that can occur outside of class.
  • Enables new methods of feedback and mentoring whether from the teacher, peers, or mentors.
