More vegetables in a smaller space
"What will be planted in the bed?"This is an example of a spring sown bed.
The focus in this bed is on plants that keep bearing (pick and pick again). Supports will be provided for the plants that need it. The beds are 2m by 1m. By planting using the square foot method we can pack a lot into a small space and let veges like courgettes and cucumbers overflow onto the ground This time of the year the best veges to plant changes from month to month. . Beds can be designed to your requirements and multiple beds will be planted with greater varieties and quantities. This will also include slower growing veges such as broccoli or cabbage. When you dig your own patch, it is really hard work to bury the grass the necessary 2 spade depths down (you can scrape it away but that is robbing the soil of humus and nutrients). If the grass isn't buried deeply enough it grows through
to the surface and smothers the seedlings. Even if the grass is buried correctly the weeds start to sprout due to the seeds in the soil that you bring to the surface and you will need to weed and weed again otherwise the weeds will compete with your seedlings and you will get less veges that are not as good as they could be. The topsoil in a garden is often quite poor for growing vegetables, because of things like pH balance problems, nutrient deficiency, too muck clay, poor humus content, etc etc. Even in a raised bed, ordinary topsoil will crack and dry out. You can get test kits for soil and find and solve any problems you may have but by far the easiest way is to start off on the right foot with a raised bed full of quality soil. The easiest and fastest way to great veges Start with a fresh, premium mix soil with a good pH balance, great structure and water retaining qualities and you will get great results with much less maintenance. Our soil is 100% weed-free, so all the nutrients go into your veges and not into weeds. Great soil is important in any garden and even more so in a food garden, especially if you want to garden organically. "What size are the raised beds?"Our standard raised beds are 2m by 1m. Other sizes and shapes are available on request.Beds can be either 28cm or 42cm high.
The higher beds, as well as looking great, are easier to harvest from - making
them particularly useful for people with mobility issues. We also do custom made beds to fit your garden or your balcony. An example of this is shown below.
Delivery charges for other areas are available on request. Need a box
to fit in a certain area? Want a box planted with herbs only? Call Russell to discuss your needs. Or send me an email and I'll answer any questions you have. Home: 09 836 0087 Mob: 021 128 6756 Email: tmrussell99@ymail.com "Does the timber used to make the boxes really make any difference?"We use only quality macrocarpa for our boxes. The reason is that the chemicals used to preserve pine (the H3, H4 treatments etc) can leech into the soil (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromated_copper_arsenate for more information).Macrocarpa needs no treatment to be naturally more durable than pine and although treated pine is cheaper, we would not be happy planting your veges in a soil that will eventually contain leeched chemicals. "How can I ensure I get fresh and tasty vegetables?"Vege gardens are all about results and this package will get you off to the best possible start. The main reasons vege gardens fail are: poor soil
