Garden Railroad

Fun in the Backyard

The engine shown to the left is a two-truck Shay steam locomotive made by Bachmann Trains which manufactures a number of models in 1:22 and 1:20 scale. The Shay is from Bachmann's Spectrum line and is a 1:20 scale model of an articulated steam engine commonly used for logging and mining where navigating sharp curves was necessary in mountainous country.

Large scale garden railroads are built around G gauge track and run model trains (electric and/or live steam) in a number of different scales from 1:32 to 1:20 and more.

Garden railroading is an interesting hobby whether you are a serious scale modeller or just want to play with trains or are somewhere in between.

I've found it to be a very nice diversion from my day job and while I am not very handy with tools, I've managed to build some things (like the bridge and trestle work in the photo to the left) and am very happy with how they turned out.
