Lesson Four

Unsung Heroes

Now that we have worked to consider Columbus's exploration from multiple perspectives, we are going to extend the critical literacy skills we are developing to a much broader period of American history.

If Columbus isn't the hero our first grade teacher made him out to be then who are are in U.S history? There are many "unsung heroes" who have fought for racial and gender justice in this country, and this is the perfect time to learn about their struggle and accomplishments.

In class, we will have a social event where each of you will play a role. You will mingle and talk with each other learning general details about heroes in U.S history. Visit the site below and browse the characters that will be present at our gathering. Pick several figures that you would be interested in playing, and then mark those on our role-play sign up sheet at the end of class. Make sure you indicate a first AND second choice.
