Boardgames Project Up

posted May 1, 2011 2:42 PM by Jay Arnold

I've started a new project. The Wings of War project worked out so well, that I thought it would be neat to have an on-hand selection of boardgames and card games our recipients could have on short notice. We've even have a few ready to go already. Check it out here:
https://sites.google.com/site/gamesfortroops/home/projects/boardgames

Let me know if you'd like to donate to this great project.

Thanks,
Jay

New Games for Troops Google Group

Regular old email just isn't cutting it anymore. So I've started a Google Group to help manage communication and collaboration. Check it out and join here:

The way too late update

posted Apr 27, 2011 7:55 AM by Jay Arnold

I apologize for not putting out an update sooner. We have had some big
news in the meantime.

First, some notes  of thanks from our recipients.

Kelly, the recipient of the Dark Heresy project says:
"We are have had some great games since your support was received!
The guys can't wait for the weeks end so that they can get somemore.
That said I have failed to provide you with a picture as of yet and
will in due time make good on it.  I have one away on Leave and upon
his return will make good.  Thanks again so much for your support."

Lou, the Wings of War recipient has this to say:
"I just wanted to let you know that the package arrived today. It
looks like everything is there, and intact. I'm busy today, so I won't
get to the MWR tent to host a game tonight, but I will ASAP and send
you some pictures to post on the website ...

"Anyway, thank you again. On behalf of the guys out here in RC-E, we
appreciate the support you've provided and look forward to hours of
recreation and decompression!!!!"

I have another fighter to send Lou and some 40K novels to send Kelly,
so we're not done with these guys just yet.

So, project updates:
Darkest Africa - We have a recipient now! We just need our dutiful
painter to finish up the figures and the pledged dice and other
accessories and the project will be ready to go.

Northwest Frontier - Recipient is also ready for this project. The
pledged dice and accessories will put it over the top and it will be
ready to go.

Warhammer Fantasy - We need dwarves! If you know of someone who has
some dwarves that need home, here's a good one. The greenskins are at
the painters. Some terrain is needed, but dice and accessories are
pledged. No recipient yet.

Check Your 6! Jet Age - Terrain is at the painter, jets are in the
pipeline. Mat, dice and accessories are in hand. No recipient yet,
either.

I was entertaining the thought of opening up to include board games
the likes of Settlers of Catan, Carcassconne, Descent, Command and
Colors, etc. What if we send a game of this ilk and then a card or
dice game or two such as Guillotine, Fluxx or Munchkin to our
recipients? This way, we can just accept donations without regard to
matching them up to particular projects. The recipients can then just
pick and choose from a menu of selections.

So, that's it for now. If you have any suggestions, let me know.

Thanks everybody,
Jay

Not April Fool's Update

posted Apr 2, 2011 8:25 PM by Jay Arnold

Recruits was a great time. If you can only make it to one con, this is
the one. My Star Trek game went off well, players had a great time.
Truth be told, the project had started out as a way for me to pass the
time in Afghanistan that didn't involve waiting for the internet. It
was great to see it come together. I played in a neat 5mm Steampunk
game based off Gaslight. My infantry successfully boarded a landship
and wrecked it, but the enemy leader got away on an aeronef before my
boys could get to him. Great time. Also played a game of uncharted
Seas in which the only other players were my brother and two of my
best friends. Great fun.

Enough jibba jabber. The stauses:

Darkest Africa
https://sites.google.com/site/gamesfortroops/home/projects/darkest-africa
Almost there. Just waiting to receive the pledged dice and askaris.

Northwest Frontier
https://sites.google.com/site/gamesfortroops/home/projects/northwest-frontier
Paper terrain in the mail, just waiting on dice and other accessories
and we can get this one out to its recipient.

Warhammer Fantasy
https://sites.google.com/site/gamesfortroops/home/projects/fantasy-battle
Dwarf book received. Orcs and Goblins book received. Goblin figures
received. This one is coming along nicely. A small note, if you've
pledged figures and or painting, drop me a note and let me know where
your pledge stands. Just trying to gauge where we are on wrapping this
up.

Wings of War
https://sites.google.com/site/gamesfortroops/home/projects/wings-of-war
This is ready to go. We just need a recipient. Still.

(Not so) NEW (-ish) PROJECTS
Check Your 6 - Jet Age
https://sites.google.com/site/gamesfortroops/home/projects/cy6-ja
Rules and hexmat are in hand now. This one is looking good.

Dark Heresy
https://sites.google.com/site/gamesfortroops/40krpg
Making this one a two-stage project. Stage one is out the door and
consists of the RPG books and a trilogy book. More novels will go out
in stage two. Big thanks from the men of TF MED in Iraq.

Again, thanks to everyone for your pledges and donations.

Shot, over. Shot, out.

Our first project is out the gate! I just dropped off our first
project at the post office here in little Pleasant Hill, IL.

Thanks to Paul, Aaron, Dave and Brett for their donations.

Thanks to Jake for helping get the word to our recipient about Games for Troops.

One down, as many more are needed to go.

Pre-Recruits Update

posted Mar 24, 2011 6:49 AM by Jay Arnold

Another great week. Some major progress on a number of projects was
afoot. The search for recipients continues. And now, the current
statuses:

Darkest Africa
https://sites.google.com/site/gamesfortroops/home/projects/darkest-africa
Our original project has made some progress. Just waiting to receive
the pledged dice and askaris.

Northwest Frontier
https://sites.google.com/site/gamesfortroops/home/projects/northwest-frontier
Almost there. Dice don't fail me now!

Warhammer Fantasy
https://sites.google.com/site/gamesfortroops/home/projects/fantasy-battle
Dwarf army book pledged! We need some goblins and orcs. Dice also pledged.

Wings of War
https://sites.google.com/site/gamesfortroops/home/projects/wings-of-war
This is ready to go. We just need a recipient. Still.

NEW (-ish) PROJECTS
Check Your 6 - Jet Age
https://sites.google.com/site/gamesfortroops/home/projects/cy6-ja
My brother Chris reports all the flight stands have been donated and
are in hand along with some decals and a pair of F86s. He have rules,
a hexmat, dice and terrain markers pledged.

Dark Heresy
https://sites.google.com/site/gamesfortroops/40krpg
Have everything in hand for this one, including an unsolicited
donation of the Deathwatch Core Rulebook. Awesome. Just need a few
more novels and this one is out the door.

Not a sea change like the previous week, but having one ready and
another two on the cusp makes me excited. Once Wings and Heresy get
out the door we'll talk about the pulp project.

I'm heading to Spring Recruits in Lee's Summit, just outside Kansas
City. I'll be meeting my brother, a friend of ours and many other
friends from days past. Stop by my Star Trek game Saturday morning and
say hi. Adepticon in Chicago is this weekend as well. Safe travels for
all and good gaming.

Again, thanks to everyone for your pledges and donat

St Pat's Update

posted Mar 17, 2011 6:25 PM by Jay Arnold

Wow, what a week. We've had a number of new pledges, some new projects and recipients identified. So, the current statuses:

Darkest Africa
https://sites.google.com/site/gamesfortroops/home/projects/darkest-africa
Our original project has made some progress. We have all the dice, construction materials, play mat pledged now.

Northwest Frontier
https://sites.google.com/site/gamesfortroops/home/projects/northwest-frontier
The same donor of the Darkest Africa dice is pitching in here, too. I'll be printing some paper terrain shortly and this will be ready to go. We do have a recipient identified and just waiting on one or two more things to get it out the door.

Warhammer Fantasy
https://sites.google.com/site/gamesfortroops/home/projects/fantasy-battle
We now have a hardback Orcs and Goblins army book pledged. We still need a Dwarf army book pledge.

Wings of War
https://sites.google.com/site/gamesfortroops/home/projects/wings-of-war
This is ready to go. We just need a recipient.

NEW PROJECTS
Check Your 6 - Jet Age
https://sites.google.com/site/gamesfortroops/home/projects/cy6-ja
My brother Chris is heading up collecting the items for this project. He have rules, a hexmat, dice and terrain markers pledged. We just need aircraft miniatures and flight stands to get this one ready.

Dark Heresy
https://sites.google.com/site/gamesfortroops/40krpg
This project is the result of a direct request from a deployed service member. This one should be ready to go next week. We're sending two Dark Heresy/Rogue Trader Warhammer 40,000 RPG supplement books along with a stack of 40K novels for inspiration.

I am in the process of reaching out to various veterans resources to find recipients. I'll keep y'all posted, as always. Also, I think I'll stick with weekly email updates.

Again, thanks to everyone for your pledges and donations.

Long time coming

posted Mar 10, 2011 4:44 PM by Jay Arnold

We're back in the swing of things and moving forward. The Wings of War project is complete and we may have a recipient for it. I have sent him an email and await his response.

We also now have the accessories for the Northwest Frontier, Darkest Africa and Warhammer Fantasy projects pledged. Matt D. of the Bengal Club LA has pledged the dice, measuring devices, X-Acto knives and glue sticks needed. One step closer to completion! Thanks tons, Matt.

Apologize for the delays

posted Dec 22, 2009 2:11 AM by Jay Arnold   [ updated Dec 22, 2009 2:15 AM ]

I apologize for delays in updates and contacting donors. I have received a number of packages and need to contact our generous donors. I will endeavor to get in touch with everyone I have not contacted so far by Wednesday of this week. There's no excuse for it. I was away for two weeks at an Army leadership course, but am back now and will get back in the swing of things.

In other news, I still need recipients. If you or someone you know is deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq and would enjoy any of these projects, let me know.

Thanks.
