Each year, the Geneva Academic Foundation (GAF) receives grant requests from teachers in the Geneva schools to fund items that the teachers feel would most benefit their students. Since 1987, GAF has funded over $1,100,000 in grant requests. On April 7, 2012, the Geneva community and GAF lost a local treasure with the passing of Mary Hogan Bencini. Mary had been a passionate supporter of all things Geneva, but especially Geneva schools. In her honor, GAF renamed the GAF Teacher Grants as the 'Bencini Memorial Grants'.
