Our annual potluck was held on the 5th of December at our house again, located at 1211 1st Avenue in Vinton.  Students and spouses from three of the Iowa Irish groups attended.  Each student provided the entertainment for the day in the form of a poem, trivia, historical fact, and song.  We ended the entertainment with a rousing rendition of the Hokey Pokey in Irish around our dining room table.

Next year our plan is to do a traditional Celtic dinner celebrating the Celtic New Year of November 1 with each student representing an historical figure, or mythological figure and telling us the story of that person.  We will gather in a circle near the end with lighted candles and share a word or two about a recently passed away relative or friend whose spirit we hope has joined with us in the celebration.  Plan on being part of this new Iowa Gaeltacht tradition.

Classes have started back up after the holidays.  Check out the groups in Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, and Dubuque.

I am thinking of starting up an organization in the CR area that would meet periodically and just talk about Irish topics.  Perhaps we could call it the Irish Cultural Society.  We could meet and discuss Irish history, or current events such as politics or sports while sipping a beverage and munching on scones.  Let us know what you think.
